Valerie Varnuska is particularly interested in robots and enjoys seeing the increasingly complex ways robots can walk and complete tasks. Boston Dynamics, a subsidiary of Google, is known for its highly advanced human-like robots. On February 27, 2017, Boston Dynamics officially unveiled “Handle,” its newest robot. Handle is more than 6 feet tall, can move nine miles per hour, and can jump four feet into the air. Early video shows Handle leaping over hurdles and maneuvering with precision, even on icy terrain. Handle's two articulated legs end in wheels, which allow it to traverse everything from staircases to icy slopes with relative ease. The robot's two arms end in rubber nubs that can be swapped with a variety of grabbing tools, allowing Handle to lift items in excess of 100 pounds and complete a variety of tasks.
