The strategic geo-political situation of the Arkhangelsk region: • the largest territory in the N-WFD • the geographical and historical centre of the Russian North • «the gateway to Arctic», the initial point for the Northern Maritime Route. Perspectives: the deep-water port and railway Belkomur (The White Sea– Komi-Ural) • Consumer market 35 million (1500 km from Arkhangelsk) 9

The economic potential of the Arkhangelsk region: • Mineral resources (oil, gas, diamonds, bauxite, multi-metallic ores, gold, platinum…) • Forestry, energy, fishery resources • High-technological production – space-launching site Plesetsk, Northern Centre of ship-building and ship- repairing, pulp-and-paper production 10
