Pat nazemetz reinventing retirement

  1. 1. Patricia Nazemetz NAZ DEC,Consulting for the Talent Age March, 2012
  2. 2. It’s happening...
  3. 3. What does retirement mean in 2012?
  4. 4. The next chapter or the end of an era?• We know the day will come• We avoid thinking about it• We imagine we can outrun it• We think we’ll be prepared
  5. 5. Are we ready?Rarely!
  6. 6. Getting to the next phase• An end is:• A transition• A beginning
  7. 7. What I Know……• The higher the level, the more difficult the transition• We define ourselves in and through our work• Financial prep does not equal emotional prep• We have not invested in ourselves as we would a business venture or project
  8. 8. What I learned…..> Plan > Prepare > Be Purposeful > Find your Passion > Start a Project
  9. 9. • The Project* is writing the next chapter• You are the author and the project manager* A project is a planned undertaking, not something done by whimsy, but completed as the result of a thoughtful process.
  10. 10. Projects must be resourced properly to be successful• You have the lead, but you aren’t in this alone• Engage / enlist friends, family, colleagues• Create a Council of Trusted Advisors• Invest in professional support
  11. 11. Components of your project plan will include:• Financial• Psychological• Social• Emotional• Educational
  12. 12. Think of this as a journey of DISCOVERY
  13. 13. Your goal on this Journey...• Discover what is in the Box?• What are you passionate about?• Can you define it in a word?• In two or three?
  14. 14. Then you begin your EXPLORATORY phase
  15. 15. • On what paths can your passion take you?• How will you find the right path?• Consulting, volunteering, teaching, new paths, entrepreneurial roads….• Go outside your comfort zone
  16. 16. And then you CONNECT
  17. 17. And then you CONNECT• Put the pieces together• Connect the dots of your life’s experiences• Build on what you know• Draw upon the relationships you have built• They are farther reaching than you think
  18. 18. Living the next chapter• Write as you go• Learn to live with flexibility and uncertainty• Have fun with it• Enjoy the rewards of strong life experiences
  19. 19. What else I have learned• There are no wrong choices• Move forward with less precision and more risk• Be less pensive and more active• The reservoir of experiences built is deeper and more sustaining than you think
  20. 20. What I Miss• The community• The structure• The familiarity• The daily challenge• BUT... I wouldn’t turn back!
