  9. 9. ’The Union has planned to dip into our reserves this year by £77,229, i.e.we will be spending this much more than we predict to be receiving inincome. This shortfall has come about for several reasons, including:• The closure of our York House Union Store by the University, in order to make way for a supermarket in Bramber House and the replacement of our York House store with a less income-generating partnership with the Co-operative supermarket, especially in its initial year.• Increasing staff costs and overhead costs (non-staff costs) due to inflation• Reduced value of our annual block grant from the University in comparison to rising costs www.sussexstudent.com/studentsdecide2012 #studentsdecide on Twitter
  10. 10. ’Ways in which we are working to increase our income for next year’s budget include:• Setting up a new lettings agency, which is going well so far. It has yet to generate any income for the Union, but we expect it to help us meet our shortfall next year.• Increasing the surplus from our shops, bars and events, by ensuring better quality, pricing, and customer service, as well as encouraging more students to support their Union by using our services. They have been doing well so far this year, and are helping to offset some of the initial costs of the cooperative supermarket partnership.• Next year the partnership with the Co-operative supermarket will be about £30,000 more valuable, as this year there is a 6-month rent-freeze (and we receive a proportion of their rent to the University).• Negotiating a higher annual block grant from the University. This is a very important part of our plans to reduce our deficit, and we are in the process of presenting a case for investment to VCEG, outlining why investment in the Students’ Union is so important in improving students’ experiences at Sussex. www.sussexstudent.com/studentsdecide2012 #studentsdecide on Twitter
