TOPIC OUTLINE
 What is digital video.
 How to create and edit digital video.
 Digital video file format.
 How to use digital video in multimedia
product.
VIDEO
 A moving pictures.
 Videos allow the audience to view actual events
instead of just reading about or listening to them.
DIGITAL VIDEO
 Digital video is recorded digitally, as ones and
zeros. Since it is stored in a digital format, digital
video can be recognized and edited by a
computer, which is also a digital device.
SOURCE OF DIGITAL VIDEO
 Recording of live action.
 Series of graphic images played in rapid
succession similar to cartoon.
 videos from web sites.
The file format of the digital video
determines:
 Which softwares can open and play it.
 How much storage space it occupies.
 How fast it travels over an Internet
connection.
VIDEO FILE FORMATS
 AVI (Audio Video Interleave)
 Windows format, plays in Windows Media Player
 Very good quality, even at smaller resolutions
 Large file size – not recommended for delivering video over
the Internet.
 Popular format for videos stored on a computer.
 MOV (Movie)
 Apple format, plays in the QuickTime Player
 Very good quality
 Popular format for videos downloaded from the Internet.
VIDEO FILE FORMATS
 MPEG (Moving Pictures Expert Group)
 The standard for compression and storage of audio and motion video
for use on the World Wide Web.
 Creates video small file sizes.
 Popular format for videos downloaded from the Internet.
 Its biggest advantage is that it will play in many different media
players.
 RM (RealMedia)
 Plays in the RealPlayer player.
 Typically contains a movie clip.
 Popular format for streaming video viewed over the Internet.
 Real Player is generally supported by many different computers and
operating systems.
VIDEO FILE FORMATS
 WMV (Windows Media Video)
 Proprietary video format developed by Microsoft.
 Plays in Windows Media Player.
 Popular format for streaming video viewed over the Internet.
 FLV (Flash Video)
 New file format widely used on the Internet.
 Plays in Adobe Flash Player.
 Very small file size.
 Popular format for streaming video viewed over the Internet
CHARACTERISTICS OF DIGITAL
VIDEO
A frame is a single image in a video
sequence.
3 basic characteristics:
 Frame Rate:
Number of images displayed within
a specified amount of time to
convey a sense of motion.
Frame rate is usually describes in
frames per second (fps).
30 frames per second
CHARACTERISTICS OF DIGITAL
VIDEO-CONT
 Frame Size/Image Size:
The height and width of each
individual frame.
 Color Depth or Resolution:
The amount of color for each pixel
within each frame or image.
COLOR DEPTH
 Refer to the number of colors displayed on
the screen at one time.
 Computer deal with RGB color (Red-green-
Blue) format.
 It’s ranging from 1 bit-2 color, 8bits-256
color,16 bit-65,535 color and 24 bit-
16.7million color).
Characteristics of digital video
Video Frame 1 Video Frame 2 Video Frame 3…
Frame Size : height and
width of a frame
(measured in pixels)
Color Depth : number of
colors per image, related to
number of bits per color (24
bits for 16 million color)
Frame Rate : number of
frames displayed over a
period of time (second)
SOFTWARE FOR VIDEO EDITING
 Gold Disk’s Astound Studio
 Adobe Premiere
 Adobe After Effects
USING VIDEO
 Used it for information delivery and present
complex information.
 Choose most appropriate video file.
 Not too much transition and special effect
cause delay in rendering process.
 Try to have smaller file.
 If the capturing and editing software is
different, make sure to set it to standard
format so it can be used in both process.
DIGITAL VIDEO SOFTWARE
Come in 3 basic
forms:
1. Video capture.
2. Video editing.
3. Video playback
applications.
o Video Capture :
- Used to control video
capture height & width.
- Include ability to control
video signal input; color
and brightness.
- Control frame rate, frame
size, color depth, and
audio sampling.
DIGITAL VIDEO SOFTWARE
 Video Editing :
 Copy, cut, paste and delete video frames.
 Combine frames from 2 or more video data
sources.
 Changing size or frame rate of the video data
segments.
 Editing audio by remove, copy or adding.
 Adding special effect to video clips such as
titles or transitions between video segments.
DIGITAL VIDEO SOFTWARE
 Video Playback:
 Play the video within a window or
full screen application with
controls to play, pause, stop,
rewind, fast forward and frame
advance or retreat.
 User can jump around the video
by pointing to certain location of
the frame video.
SPECIAL EFFECT
 Transition:
 Such as fading, wiping, splatters,
scrolling, stipple, fade-in and etc.
 Filters:
 To create emboss, zoom, pan, twist
and etc.
VIDEOS CAN BE USED IN:
 CD-ROMS
 Games
 Presentation
 Videoconferences
 Websites.
