4 Day International Moot Court Competition Concludes in UPES
“NULAS, Kochi” the Team from Kerala ” declared winners

edition of Dr. Paras Diwan Memorial (Energy Laws) International Moot Court Competition concluded in Kandoli
Campus of UPES on Sunday. This annual competition was organized by the Moot court Association in College of
Legal Studies at UPES (CoLS) from 7th
– 10th
of April and saw participation of students from 14 reputed Law
Universities of India and 2 Universities from SAARC countries which included Dhaka University, Bangladesh &
Kathmandu School of Law, Nepal. Institutes from Indian states included Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Orissa,
Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh
& Uttarakhand. UPES has been organizing this Moot Court Competition annually since 2011 in memory of Dr
Paras Diwan, an eminent jurist, a legal luminary who contributed immensely to the field of law during his life
time. This year the Moot Problem was based on “Nuclear Energy Law”.
The competition was inaugurated by the ‘Guest of Honor’ Ms Kahkasha Khan, HJS serving as Additional
Secretary(Law) in the Government of Uttarakhand on 7th
April in presence of Mr. Biswajeet Sarcar, Managing
partner of “Sarcar & Associates”, Kolkatta and Dr Parag Diwan, son of the late Dr Diwan who had travelled
from Gurgaon for this event. Diwan family has made great contributions in organizing this event throughout.
Speaking on this occasion Ms Khan shared that during her academic days the concept of such competitions
had not been conceived and made the participants realize the value of such great opportunities which they
have with them. Dr Parag Diwan was felicitated by the Chancellor on this occasion. The other dignitaries
present at the inaugural included Mr Utpal Ghosh, Presient of UPES; Dr S J Chopra, Chancellor; Dr Shrihari,
Vice Chancellor; Dr Tabrez Ahmed , Director of CoLS; Mr Sanjiv Zutshi, Senior Director; Mr. Arun Dhand,
Director – Media Affairs; Ms Deepa Verma, Director of Institutional Affairs ; senior colleagues and faculty
members.
Mr Arun Dhand, Director of Media Affairs shared that many Institutes from all over India had applied for an
entry in this competition but only the top 26 teams were shortlisted. The entire competition was by 40
eminent legal experts from Judiciary including practicing and retired judges of ‘High Courts & Supreme Court’
, well known law firms of India which included representatives of ‘ Amarchand’, ‘ Jyoti Sagar Associates’,
Luthra & Luthra’, ‘Nitish Desai Associates’ and Legal heads of ‘ONGC & ‘ GAIL’. The judges were briefed about
the rules and regulations of the competition by Ms Pallavi Arora, faculty in CoLS. The competition saw the 26
teams competing fiercely through several rounds over the first two days and of the four teams which
qualified for the semifinals included NUALS, Kochi from the state of Kerala; Jindal Global School from the state
of Haryana; Gandhinagar National Law University from the state of Gujarat and Faculty of Law from Delhi
University. The closely battled semifinals saw NUALS, Kochi and Gandhinagar National Law University reach
the final round of this competition. The final round witnessed unprecedented high levels of arguments from
both the finalists which made the job of Judges very tough but ultimately the “National University of

Advanced Legal Studies (NULAS)”from Kochi, Kerala prevailed over their rivals with a very thin margin and
were declared as winners of the “6th
Dr Paras Diwan International Moot Court Competition” which earned
them a cash prize of Rupees fifty thousand apart from the trophy. The runners up team received rupees thirty
thousand and the other two semifinalists received rupees ten thousand each.
Mohd. Hasan of Dhaka University, Bangladesh was declared as the Best Speaker of the competition, Ms Shruti
Joshi of GNLU, Gandhinagar from Gujarat was declared as the best Researcher of the competition. While the
team from NMIMS School of Law from Mumbai won the award for Best Memorial, the Team from Dhaka
University, Bangladesh was presented with a trophy for being adjudged as the Best Foreign Team. Prizes
were given away by dignitaries present at the valedictory session and included Dr Parag Diwan, his sister Ms
Peeyushi Jain, her husband Mr. Shailender Jain, Mr. R. Venkatramani, former member of Law Commission of
India, Prof Dr K.L. Bhatia, Professor of Eminence, Mr. Mohd Naseem, Former DGM-Legal of ONGC in presence
of the Vice Chancellor Dr Shrihari. Delivering the ‘Vote of Thanks’ Dr Tabrez Ahmed, Director of CoLS
conveyed his appreciation to all the faculty and staff members of UPES for their tireless efforts and made
special mention of Ms Mamta Rana, Ms Kavya Saleem & Ms Pallavi Arora from the faculty team while also
appreciating Siddhant Satpathy, Shweta Tiwari and Ayush Aggarwal from the students team.
