The cloud presents us with a different way of working together. Most people still rely on e-Mail to collaborate with others, but it’s not necessarily the right tool. Problems with collaborating via e-mail: Sending large file attachments Lose all version control People assuming they’re working from the correct version when they aren’t Difficult to track responses How do you know if someone’s read your document? The cloud allows people to collaborate together in a smarter way. It: encourages interraction and debate by bringing people’s comments together in one place everyone can access ensures people work from the latest version of a document Allows you to assign approvals Access your files anytime, anywhere We work socially and connect globally. The cloud offers us a new way of working better together through collaboration tools.
Whilst some resistance and concern is still out there about web 2.0 technologies and cloud computing in general, in our experience educational institutions are implementing and seriously looking at cloud based solutions.
We’ve already discussed e-mail. VLEs and Intranet make it difficult for institutions to collaborate outside of their own network. So what do researchers working on collaborative research projects, or the international office who need to collaborate with international partners or the partnership office who need to work with external partners do?
Staff collaboration portal – share files, create discussions. Great for institutions that have multiple campuses in different geographic locations Collaborative research projects – use Huddle where they need to collaborate on research projects with users outside of their institution – either at another institution or commercial organisation involved in a research project Distance/work-based learning students – allow collaboration between students studying in different locations. Allow them to create whiteboards to collate ideas and feedback and organise thoughts. International Office – collaborate with students and potential students from overseas and campuses based abroad. Hold web and teleconferences. Summer School – one of the UK research councils is using Huddle to enable PHD students attending a Summer school to continue collaborating and working together once they’ve returned to their individual institutions. Diploma consortia collaboration – for UK schools offering the Diploma qualifications in conjunction with other schools and FE colleges in their region, they use Huddle to collaborate together on coursework and curriculum Student collaboration – students use Huddle to work with their peers on coursework and projects Anyone who needs a secure virtual space
Not just a technology buzzword Don’t try and fit a cloud computing solution in to your institution just because you think you should or because it’s ‘cool’
