Helping the sector more
11/04/2017 Jisc’s digital content services for FE
Over a long period of time through various government policies
Over a long period of time through various government policies
And we do all of this through shared services that help institutions be more efficient, through procurement and negotiation and through the provision of services and advice and guidance
And helping the sector deal with the significant challenges they continue to face, as detailed earlier.
How are we doing this? Improve our internal operations and analysis – using this to inform decisions about content.
Closed Jorum platform – transferred content. Poor usability led to poor usage and depositing of content.
Usage data analysis – inform which books to replace during procurement for ebooks for FE
LEP data analysis – tying in with where government priorities are around apprentices and skills areas going forward
LEP data analysis, how this translates into learner numbers and where we might want to target our resource provision

Functions only available once account created.
Support videos on how to do things, made available by ProQuest.
Free to use licensed collections – all that is required is the subscription. Variety of resources shown which include different types of digital learning resource content.
Edited highlights of the resources available: shows a wide range of subject areas supporting both academic and vocational study.
Although the resources require subscription and a fee aligned with Jisc FE banding scheme – we are often able to negotiate free trials for colleges who are interested in subscribing.
A reminder of how licensed content supports sector.
Hairdressing Training – vocational content aligned to curriculum
eBooks for FE – covering: A level content, vocational content (BTECs levels 2 and 3), as well as GCSE English and Maths. Provided on ProQuest platform eBook Central
Open to use 24/7
Content is clear: has learning objectives identified and is clear against which module it is supporting. Students are guided in their learning. Used to flip the lecture – watched before the lecture takes place: teaching practitioner can focus on using teaching time to embed learning and to deal with questions arising from watching/undertaking activity, so that precious time isn’t take up with the demo.
As part of eBooks for FE service.
Due to titles put forward to us, we were unable to procure Northern Ireland CCEA titles for both English/Maths during two procurement rounds.
A reminder of why ebooks for FE is a great service
So are you thinking “Great, lots of lovely content there, how do users gain access?”
Using ebooks for FE as an example
Info provided on Jisc Collections website – descriptive information found
Gaining help should you need it when subscribing.
Screenshot here of new service in development: Jisc Content and App Store.
Seen as a potential replacement for the host of Jisc Open Education Resources
People sharing their resources
Mixed economy in a number of factors:
Content providers – Jisc and others
Licenses – open and restricted content,
Payments – free content and that which can be purchased
But it’s not just about licensing in order to get access to the resources.
You have to deal with network access and identity issues too. New service coming on-stream will enable easy access to cloud-based system for managing identity and access to resources (which is a condition of license agreements). Service where you don’t have to do the work, we will do it for you as a managed service. Is expected to deliver organisational savings of about 30%.
Given the benefits described previously….looking to consolidate and expand Jisc’s support activity for FE.
Looking forward to conversations with publishers and content owners.
Similarly, if you are a librarian working in FE, and know of a resource that would be very helpful for learners, then please do get in contact.
