  • Why we are up here talking together on 3 NISO projects -> what it means to the industry -> why is there so much emphasis on enabling content discovery Aim of each slot – high level overview - Key benefits of each project; linking; introduction; why project important to community; status; Drivers: The explosion of online publishing output The shifting scholarly communications landscape Rising user expectation The global economic crisis and impact on libraries
  • The technology and applications have changed over the years to support more integrated access to a wide variety of different content types and formats. However, all of the above have one thing in common: ALL OF THIS RELIES ON METADATA metadata is key to the presentation of online content and the ease of discoverability.
  • Here ’ s the essential process of OpenURL linking. The user finds a citation, an OpenURL is sent to his link resolver, and that redirects him to the cited article. However, this only works if the data provided to the knowledge base [CLICK] is accurate, and is provided in a timely manner. If it isn ’ t [CLICK] Relies on an accurate knowledge base of global and localised holdings to present links accurately to the APPROPRIATE COPY. Problem is…..provision of metadata to support this was patchy.
  • Of course there are admin benefits too…….less admin on the KB, less admin in dealing with end user queries / complaints, customer satisfaction, increased usage, renewal decision making easier etc etc Also increasingly used for collection development decision making – overlap / gap analysis between packages / databases
  • Guidelines Education Information Hub
  • Phase I – the global complete holdings / package info. Basic metadata However, still presents problems for content providers to provide accurately - evidenced through testing of RP
  • Phase II - Open access; consortial metadata; eBooks and conference proceedings refinement; embed endorsement framework
