1. 1. In what ways does your media product use , develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Taneha Worboys
2. Conforming: (Using) I have put the name of the magazine at the top of the page, larger than the rest of the font which is something that is seen on most magazines. Challenging: Here I have used a profanity on the front cover of my magazine which is going to be the only thing that most people will see if they don’t buy the magazine. It is something that I don’t think I have ever seen before, but I decided to use it because it was something that was appropriate and common to my audience. Developing: Here, I have added a black strip across the top of the cover advertising the ‘free CD’ that comes with the magazine. A lot of magazines have free CD’s with them and advertise them on the cover, I have just developed this by allocating the advertisement for the CD it’s own space on the cover. Challenging: I have used an image of two women on the cover of the magazine which is something that is very uncommon with the sort of magazine I have created. But I did this for a reason. I have used a photo of 2 attractive young Women, pulling aggressive faces because aggression is something that is associated with this kind of music, but it is also slightly contradictory to common views of women. I did this because I wanted to represent these women as empowered. Developing: Here I have used a normal convention of having a single masthead associated with the main article but I have split it up into two parts. Conforming: I have put an issue number on the front cover, which is something done on every magazine I have looked at. Conforming: I have put a small barcode, along with other information in the bottom corner of the magazine which is something done on all magazines. Developing: I have used a single Masthead associated with the main Article, including the name of the Main band in the magazine, but I Have split it up into two parts. Conforming: I have used a brief list of information detailing what else is going to be in the magazine, which in this case is just a list of band names. This is something done on most of the magazines I looked at. Front Cover
3. Conforming: I have put in a page number which is a common convention of Magazines. Conforming: Here I have used a large title that stands out from the rest of the article and gives a very general idea of what the article is about. Conforming: I have included a strap-line under the title of the article which gives a brief overview of what is in the interview. This was something I saw in most magazines I looked at. Challenging: Here I have used a photo of the ‘band’, but I have the two women at the front with the men taking up barely any of the picture and not distracting attention from the women. Usually it is the males who are the focus of any band in any genre, so I have gone against the grain here. Challenging: I have used a brightly coloured and patterned background, which is something that you rarely see, especially in this kind of magazine. But I have done this because it relates to the article, the band being very loud people so I felt it would be appropriate to make a background that works with the article, which is quite common. Conforming: I have used a low angled shot, to represent the fact that people look up to the band. Developing: Here I have put the main article text into two boxes that stand out from the background and make the text stand out more. Magazines usually put the text into columns but they don’t use coloured boxes behind it very often. Also I have combined these boxes with the use of the bright background to reflect the ‘individuality’ and ‘difference’ that is common within the audience I am aiming this magazine at. Conforming: I have put the name of the magazine on almost every page which is common through every magazine I looked at. Double-page Spread
4. Conforming: (Using) I have a ‘word from the editor’ which is very common in magazines covering all genres and interests. Developing: I have taken the standard contents page and instead of splitting it into ‘on the cover’ and ‘ other’, I have split it into ‘ regulars’ and ‘main features’ as an easy way for people to see what is in the magazine without them having to browse. Conforming: (Using) I have used page numbers next to the article ‘references’ so that it is easy to navigate to. Using: I have used the magazine logo on every page, which is something that you see in most magazines. It just ‘emphasises’ which magazine the person is reading. Challenging: Here I have used a rather large image of the editor which is uncommon, because usually there is only a small image or there’s no image at all. I have used A large image as the audience I’m aiming The magazine at are generalised as Developing: I have put the issue number on the contents page as well as having it on the front cover, which is something that I haven’t seen in many magazines. Conforming: I have used a block colour background for this page so as not to distract from or distort the information. This is standard for most magazines. Contents Page Conforming: I have put the word ‘ contents’ at the top of the page in large block font, which is something common with most magazines. Conforming: I have used images associated with the features in the magazine on the contents page, next to the article they are associated with. This is something that most magazines do, only sometimes the pictures are just placed randomly across the page, whereas I have placed them tidily next to the appropriate information.
