Two great algorithmic development platforms go head up. The one runs on the Zipline engine with Python at its root, the other on Lean with a strong C# and visual basic background. which is better for you ?
2. Public Mission
• Both companies have a similar goal of making
algorithmic trading accessible to everyone
instead of a select few. The two platform both
do a great job at leveling the playing field, and
thus are ranked evenly here.
1 - 1
3. Securities
• Quantopian supports US equities only, while
QuantConnect supports equities, some ETFs
and indexes, plus Forex which is a huge
advantage. It is for that reason a clear winner
here.
2 - 1
4. Tick Data
• QuantConnect offers second and minute tick
data, unlike Quantopian which is limited to
only minute data. While these engines might
not hold up under HFT pressure (making
second data less crucial), the slight edge
would grant QuantConnect the win here.
3 - 1
5. Community
• Qutopian has a huge community of over
30,000 quants and is expanding rapidly still.
With more value competitions and
promotions (due to their financing) they are
able to easily surpass QuantConnect on this
category.
3 - 2
6. Language Support
• Quantopian is a Python based platform and
sticks to it. QuantConnect is more broad and
supports over 5 languages, but in essence only
offers tutorials and support for c#. Here it is a
matter your preference between Python and
C#.
4 - 3
7. Data Perks
• While QuantConnect is reaching out to
interesting social media sentiment data
providers among others, they still lack the
fundamental data that Quantopian offers. We
are back at a tie!
4 - 4
8. Brokerage and
Paper Testing
• Both platform offer paper testing, Interactive
Brokers paper testing and live trading as well.
QuantConnect also supports Tradier Brokerage
API which gives its users $1 equity trades if
they trade through the platform. With a slight
edge we have a winner here.
5 - 4
9. Engines
• QuantConnect’s Lean engine runs smoothly
and fast, but lacks time in testing, especially
live. Quantopian’s Zipline has been tested
through many more back testing hours and
live trading hours. Although it is again slight,
we would have to lean towards Zipline here.
5 - 5
10. Conclusion
• In conclusion it’s a tie. Both platforms are of
incredible value to every quant. We cant pick a
clear winner, and would highly recommend
trying both out! With some programming
experience it is about a one week learning
curve on each.
