Bass Creek SubstationBass Creek Substation, Janesville, WIReplacement of an existing 69kV SubstationProject Scope:Replace an existing (2) line 69kV substation with a 69/138kV substation consisting of (2) 69kV lines, (2) 138kVlines, (1) 100 MVA 69/138kV transformer with oil containment, and a new 24’ X 36’ control building.The existing equipment was removed and the site was re-graded and enlarged. Special environmentalconsideration was given to an adjacent wetland area and creek. The substation equipment footprint had to becompressed as much as possible and a retention pond installed to capture storm water runoff. Major savings tothe client were realized by utilizing spare equipment from various other client substations. This required extraresearch and confirmation that the used equipment met the requirements of the new substation and in the caseof the reused steel structures, was properly modified to fit the new use. Realtime provided all engineering for thesubstation including; grading, grounding grid, raceways, foundations, steel structures, bus, equipmentspecification including a 24’ X 36’ control building, and protection and control.Design Completion Date: September 2010Client: American Transmission Company

Comerford SubstationComerford Substation, Monroe, NH230kV Switchyard RevitalizationProject Scope:This project included (2) separate project scopes: • 230kV Switchyard Revitalization • 230kV Disconnect Switch Replacement at TransCanada’s Request.The Comerford Generation Station is a (4) turbine, 160 MW hydroelectric station, located along the ConnecticutRiver. There are four, two-winding generator step-up transformers which step up the 13.8kV generator output,to supply the 230kV switchyard. Each pair of GSUs are connected to the 230kV bus, via motor operateddisconnect switches, to a common breaker position in a breaker and a half arrangement.Engineering, Design, and Construction Support Services Includes: • Replace all (11) Mineral Oil Dielectric Fluid (MODF) filled and live tank circuit breakers with SF6 breakers. • Install a new SF6 breaker. • Replace (28) motor-operated disconnect switches. • Install line traps for (5) lines. • Replace dead-end insulators supporting main and cross buses. • Install CCVTs on (3) lines. • Replace CCVT’s on (3) lines. • Design of a new control house incorporating:  Control, relay, and communication equipment required to operate the outdoor switchyard, including provision for Bulk Power Conversion.  Station AC and DC auxiliary services, and standby generator.  HVAC.  Heat detection system.  Primary and emergency lighting system.  Operator’s desk. • Switchyard Grounding: Analyze and modify the existing ground grid design to meet present National Grid standards. Extend the existing ground grid design to connect to the new equipment, control house, and the expanded fence. • Redesign the fenced area around the control building and new line positions. • Provide material lists and revise cable schedules. • Provide structural and electrical calculations and design.Design Completion Date: November 2011Client: National Grid

Staff SubstationStaff Substation, Cambria, WINew Greenfield 138kV Switching StationProject Scope:Realtime Engineers’ involvement began with finalizing the transmission company’s Facilities Study and Exhibitswithin the pending generation interconnection agreement. The substation was a greenfield site, ultimatelyconsisting of a ring bus arrangement. It is initially to be operated with (3) 138kV lines, with future expansion to(6) 138kV lines. The station will serve as a system tie between a wind farm and the local utility’s transmissiongrid. After about two years of planning and design, the new 138kV switchyard is into construction with an inservice date of May 2011.Our original scope was to design a three termination straight bus, looping an existing transmission line throughthe bus and providing a tap to an adjacent wind farm collector station. Around the time of this design’scompletion, our scope changed to designing a ring bus arrangement. Realtime expanded the design andcompleted the design package within schedule to meet the original in service date. Changing gears andincorporating the ring bus design into the construction issue saved the client about $460,000 in overall projectcost. Realtime provided all engineering for the switchyard including; grading, grounding grid, raceways,foundations, steel structures, bus, equipment specification including a 24’ X 36’ control building, and protectionand control.Realtime also provided the line loop-through scoping, design engineering, procurement support, andconstruction support for two new 90’ steel corner poles within existing ROW. We closed our work by providingnew records for creation of a newly designated line.Some interesting challenges included: Coordinating efforts with the generation owner for a single, common andjointly beneficial ground grid system of the switch station and the collector substation. Also, designing anintegrated SCADA communications system that satisfied the requirements of multiple Utility stakeholders.Design Completion Date: March 2011Client: American Transmission CompanyClient Commentary: “… this job was done with very little confusion, minor rework,and overall a design job well done. You (Realtime) always have a quick/correctanswer to the field questions and concerns… definitely made my job easier thannormal. Thanks!”
  12. 12. 500kV - 502 Junction Substation502 Junction Substation, Mount Morris, PANew Greenfield 500kV SubstationProject Scope:Realtime engineered this 500kV greenfield substation, consisting of (4) 500kV lines, designed withfuture expansion to (6) 500kV lines and future transformation to 138kV. This design required themovement of over 2 million cubic yards of materials, as well as removal of over 80 feet of mountaintop, for the ultimate substation layout.Realtime was responsible for the engineering of the (4) line terminal 500kV switchyard, whichconsisted of (8) 500kV breakers installed in a double breaker-double bus configuration. Space wasincluded for installation of a fifth and sixth 500kV line terminal, also with a double breaker-double busconfiguration. The substation was also graded for the future 500/138kV step-down transformation and138kV facilities. An approximate 40’ x 120’ metal control building was installed to house thesubstation electrical controls, metering, and communications equipment. The building also houses the125VDC storage battery and charger, and is climate controlled, complete with well and septic facilities.A 52’ x 32’ maintenance building was designed and installed, as well as a separate 16’ x 24’emergency generator building. Realtime also engineered a new SCADA system which has beeninstalled.Additional scope included the design of a new family of 500kV steel structures, for use by the client,as standards for future projects.This project invested over three years of planning and design, and the new 500kV switchyard stepdown Substation for Trans-Allegheny Interstate Line Company (TrAILCo) at 502 Junction is in-service.All substation engineering, except site and grading, were performed by Realtime for 502 Junction.Completion Date: December 2010Client: Kenny Construction Co. on behalf of TrAILCo and Allegheny Energy
  13. 13. 500/138kV - Meadowbrook SubstationMeadowbrook Substation, Winchester, VAUpgrade and Expansion of an Existing 500/138kV SubstationProject Scope:Realtime was responsible for engineering design work to accommodate the 500kV substationexpansion, (1) 500kV shunt capacitor addition, and the addition of a fourth 500/138kV 392 MVAautotransformer with LTC.Realtime engineered the protection and control design associated with the addition of a fourth500/138kV 392 MVA autotransformer with LTC. To accommodate the transformer addition, new138kV breakers were added to the breaker-and-a-half bus arrangement, and (2) 138kV lines weremoved to new bus positions. The design included (3) new relay racks, plus extensive modifications toexisting relay panels. Wiring diagrams were prepared for the new transformer and breakers. Existingannunciator, DFR, and LTC paralleling schemes were modified to accommodate the additions.Engineering design work to accommodate the 500kV substation expansion included extending (2)500kV buses, adding (4) 500kV breakers, moving (1) existing 500kV line termination, and terminating(2) new 500kV lines. Realtime’s responsibility included site design, layout, bus design, foundations,steel structures, ground grid, and equipment connections. Protection and control design included newline protection schemes, as well as incorporating the new lines into the existing bus protection andsynchronizing schemes. Replacement SCADA and annunciator systems were required for theexisting station to accommodate the line and equipment additions. Line OPGW fiber terminations andfiber interconnection panels were also part of Realtime’s responsibilities.Realtime also provided the engineering for (1) 500kV shunt capacitor addition, consisting of a 500kVbus extension, installation of a 500kV motor-operated disconnect switch, and (1) 500kV circuit breaker(with synchronous closing), additional 500kV CVT’s, 500kV reactors, 500kV arresters, and (3) singlepole manually-operated grounding switches, (1) 200/F288 MVAR shunt capacitor bank with phase andneutral imbalance detection equipment, yard lighting, and shielding. New control panels wereinstalled in the existing control building, within an area formerly used for material storage.Modifications to the building partition wall were required.Completion Date: December 2010Client: Kenny Construction Co. on behalf of TrAILCo and Allegheny Energy
  14. 14. 138kV – New Line Route DeterminationNorth LaSalle – Fox River; Ottawa – Fox River138kV – Transmission Line Route EvaluationRealtime evaluated 180 miles of potential Right of Way to define three alternativeroutes for new 138kV transmission lines for a major mid-western utility.Project Scope:Realtime performed the following tasks to establish routes for two new transmission lines: • Provided LiDAR Aerial Surveys and video imagery of potential routes • Evaluated data to create route selection criteria • Facilitated the route selection process with the client’s Real Estate and Transmission Line Engineering groups • Provided on-site field verification of areas of concern for the identified routes • Assisted in the development of design standards for the new line, including equipment and material specifications • Created property-owner database for Real Estate support and notification of affected owners • Developed graphics and participated in informational workshops for property owners and the communities at large • Assisted in providing formal documentation for the filing with the Illinois Commerce CommissionDesign Challenges & Solutions:The 38 miles of new line complete a proposed transmission loop in northern Illinois. Thecomplexity of the project included designing multiple corridors through both rural andurban areas.Realtime’s application of evaluation criteria led to the selection of a preferred route.Additionally, Realtime coordinated all of the required environmental analysis and utilizedthat data for site selection.   15. 15. 138kV- Rated – Transmission Line Relocation Wausau, WisconsinU.S. Highway 51 & South 29 Line RelocationA Wisconsin Public Service Corporation 34.5KV distribution line needed to be relocatedas a result of a Wisconsin Department of Transportation highway interchange project.Incorporating a future upgrade to 138kV, Realtime engineered five new steel-pole structuresto accommodate the newly constructed overpasses.Project Scope:Realtime performed the following tasks: • Preliminary and final design of the line alignment, structures and foundations • Coordination with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and Wisconsin Public Service Corporation • Steel-pole structure design and specifications • Soils investigation specifications and subcontractor coordination • Drilled-pier foundation design and construction specifications • Line construction specification • Construction documentation including PLSCADD files • Field support to construction contractors • Final project close-outDesign Challenges & Solutions:Long transmission line spans and clearance requirements over new highway overpasseslead to custom poles ranging in heights up to 115 feet.Poor soil conditions resulted in deep, large-diameter drilled-pier foundations.Total Constructed Cost Approximately: $2 millionClient: Wisconsin Public Service Corporation
  16. 16. 69kV – Manitowoc Public Utilities Transmission Line Relocation69kV – Line Relocation for Power Plant ExpansionRealtime engineering the relocation of a 69kV transmission line at municipal power plantunder extremely adverse space constraints.Project Scope:Realtime engineered the following: • Five new steel poles on foundations • Provided structural analysis • Provided soil borings and surveying • 69kV line was designed to 138kV standards • Realtime provided specifications for all of the new equipment and poles, as well as, construction specifications for the new lineDesign Challenges & Solutions:This relocation project involved an already highly congested utility area, which included acomplete coal-fired power plant and storm water-sewage treatment plant, bordering LakeMichigan’s shoreline.The design area was squeezed on a prohibitively narrow strip of land, adjoining these twofacilities and the lakeshore. Adverse space constraints included maintaining accessrequirements for semi-truck traffic and railroad traffic in and out of the coal-fired plant on anarrow, tight-fitting strip of land.Design requirements included accommodating for multi-ton loads of coal and material to bedriven on soil directly adjacent to the transmission line poles’ foundations. Due to thelakeshore, soil borings and geotechnical requirements were significantly more challenging.As a result of the complexities of the plant expansion, systems coordination betweencontractors working on the plant build-out, substation re-design, and the additional linerequirements necessitated stringent communications among all stakeholders. Thecombination of designing in a physically congested, high-trafficked area, while meetingaggressive timeframes and budget constraints, allowed Realtime the opportunity to providevaluable design solutions to our client.Total Constructed Cost Approximately: $650,000Client: Manitowoc Public Utilities
