  2. 2. PREFACE | Welcome to my portfolio. This portfolio shows mypassion for architecture and its related disciplines, myinterests and some extra cirricular activities. Someprojects are done during my Bachelor and Mastertrack of Architecture at the Technical University inEindhoven. My portfolio shows a lot of diversity, in which mypersonal view and interest field plays an importantrole throughout as can be seen in the pavilion designbased on water sports, studios for artists that fitwithin the image of Eindhoven, but also my graduateproject where the combination is found betweentheoretical research and an design proposal for tworesidential buildings. Next to my passion for architecture I have alwaysshown a great interest in photography and graphicdesign. I use both disciplines to show and explain myarchitectural designs. They give the opportunity toshow your personal frame of reference. Next to thatyou can keep developing within these fields, whichkeeps stimulating my learning process.

  6. 6. WOONGEBOUW [2] OP EEN BREUKVLAK | This project conveys my graduation project, andcovers the disciplines Architecture & Engineering[AE], Architecture History & Theory [AHT] andArchitecture Urban Culture[AUC]. The graduationstarted within a studio ‘NEXT’ of 13 people andresulted in a publication of an encyclopedia witha collection of buildings that are (non) physicalstanding next to each throughout the whole Dutcharchitectural history. From the theoretical approachof the publication the individual research started witha literature study. This resulted in an essay about therelationship between the intermediate sphere of theprivate house and the public domain and a designproposal of two residential buildings. The design of the two residential buildings is basedon a vision in which the urban morphological systemsPlan Kalff (1876) and Plan Zuid (1920) (H.P.Berlage)are reinterpreted. In the design the living culture isrestored. The materiality and the the intermediatesphere of the private house and the public domainall refer to the characteristic small streets with thethe living block as urban microcosm.

  15. 15. MEtripolitaan Amsterdam | This project conveys the first project in de mastertrack Architecture & Urban Culture [AUC]. Theassignment was to design a metripolitaan buildingnear the Dam in Amsterdam. It should consist of adiversity of functions. This resulted in a morphologicaland typological research and a list of requirementsthat would increase the number of shoppingcustomers and that would connect the Rokin withthe upcoming North-South line in Amsterdam. The masterplan consists of a mix of retail andculture in six different buildings. The architecturegrammar refers to the the canal of Amsterdam withthe individual plot structure and canal houses of the17th century. The whole masterplan is connectedwith a public route that opens the curtains of theenclosed cultural mix of the backside of the Rokin.I especially focussed myself on the renovation ofan old meat factory and transformed it in a publicexhibition building with a mix of working spaces andstudio`s. The silhouet of the building remained andforms the face the enclosed cultural activity.

  22. 22. Scheveningen | This project conveys my final bachelor assignment, and covers all disciplines to be found within buildingengineering/ architecture. The assignment was todesign a pier that will replace the currently existingone, which includes the whole area surrounding theKurhaus. The primer function of the integral designis offering a musical basis for ‘North Sea Jazz’. The design is based on a vision in which thebreakers of schEVENINGen are translated into alldisciples. Entertainment is added to the pier and thearchitectural context of the areas. The pier is definedby the layered pattern en the contact with the seasurrounding it. The functionality is mixed with thedifferent level, which eventually excesses in a port ofcall for local boat owners. I was responsible for the construction technique.Within this discipline the transformation from day tonight was the central focus. Details and materials areused which make it possible to have a transformationin appearance and character. This project is part ofa design competition, and is currently part of anexhibition on the current pier in Scheveningen

Sfeervol!

  31. 31. Between the Walls | This project conveys my second master project inthe track Architecture & Theory [AHT] and the trackArchitecture & Engineering [AE] at the KTH (KungligaTechniska Hogskolan) in Stockholm. The assignmentwas to design a workers building on the WoodlandCemetary that will replace the currently existing onewith due observance of the surroundings. The woodland cemetary is an Unesco World Heritageside , is located in Stockholm and is designed byGunnar Asplund & Sigurd Lewerentz. The site isdescribed as a natural landscape where the architectsan extraordinary environment of tranquil beautycreated that influenced cemetery design throughoutthe world. The architects tried empathize with themourners. From a theoretical approach I formulatedthe concept that they architects try to ‘frame’ thesite and the existing buildings are mostly designedprimairly to relief the mourners. The design is based on a private working space thatis oriented towards the innerside. The workers canfind their relief here and do not disturb the procesof mourning.

  40. 40. SML| This assignment comprised the redesigning of the‘Pastoor of Arskerk’ located in Eindhoven. Since afew years many churches, always located in centreareas, are abandoned and as a result left empty. Thesocial function becomes part of discussion. When entering the church the structure andarchways are very distinctive, which emphasizes theheight of the building, with a very spacious inner area. The choice for the new facilities was elderly homesor studios. Because of the art and cultural identity ofEindhoven I chose to go for studios, which fits mypersonal preferences better also. The studios are built up out of working space andexposition space. The diversity of art resulted in abasic studio that expands in different levels aftergetting wider and higher. By dividing the units andlinking then to primary colours, a strong intensityappears that changes the complete space. Thedivision will change every time new artists enter, which keeps the play of light and division alive.

  47. 47. INTERNSHIP | I followed an internship at the architecture officeArchitecten | EN | EN in Eindhoven. The office hasa poetic and pragmatic vision on architecture. Theirportfolio consists of a broad range of differentprojects from urban planning to interior projects.A well known project of them is the theatre inEindhoven: Parktheater. The office is also very activein the urban planning of the previously Philips areaStrijp S. I was part of several facets in the architectureoffice. I worked together with a senior architect onprivate housing, residential housing, master plansand different concept ideas. During my internschipthe architecture office was subject to a renewalin the acquisition of the office. I participated inrearrangement of the office with new interiorfurniture.
