5. 04. 15SCREEN HOME
Screen Home is a 1200 sq. ft. residence situated in Urbana, Illinois. The home consists of a minimal program that is meant to accommodate one to three people and is
separated vertically into public spaces below and private above. The public spaces change in elevation with the site via the hearth which integrates a stair into its
massing. The private spaces above are visually connected to the communal spaces below via a walkway that is exposed within the double height space. The simplici-
ty and modesty of program is accented by cedar planking at the base of the exterior, brick above and concrete throughout. These materials wrap the structure and
integrate themselves into the home, blurring the delineation of inner and outer. This dissolving together of inner and outer spaces is elevated by the extensive use
of exterior screening and glazing. A majority of the ground level cladding consists of glazing with a vertical louver system that prevents clear views from without
while allowing for light control from within. A suspended screen connected from the home provides further shading to the exterior west walkway which directly al-
lows access from the street to the bottom of the site. The home projects from the street and falls with the landscape relating the architecture with this sloping
site. At street level, the volume is subtracted away revealing a green porch space separated from the street by a mesh screen wall covered in climbing ivy, allow-
ing for dissolved views from the street and from the porch bench which is integrated directly into the exterior wall. Screen Home attempts to take advantage of
natural lighting while allowing for extensive control by its occupants and dissolves inner and outer spaces in this way. Furthermore, the home provides a balance of
functional living spaces with open communal spaces while relating to its sloping landscape.
