1. 1. From the Novels of Azuela and Carr
By Candace L. Conti
2. 2. “The Underdogs” by Mariano Azuela
“The Underdogs” is a novel that is centered around The Mexican Revolution that unravels a story based around the spontaneous uprising of the people of Mexico.
The main character in the novel that the reader especially becomes close to is Demetrio Macias.
Demetrio who was once a peasant farmer, rises up after being chased by the Federal's and forms a group of rebels who support the Mexican Revolution.
Demetrio eventually takes the earns the position of General in Pancho’s Villas Army.
3. 3. Demetrio leads the group of rebels to fight against the federal forces of Victoriano Huerta.
Demetrio was chosen as a leader because of his ability to lead men in battle and therefore he was looked up to because of his strength.
While in the beginning of the novel Demetrio is fighting for the good of his country and truly wants change for his country, by the end of the novel Demetrio seems to lose sight of the purpose for this battle.
By revealing this of Demetrio’s character, The Author is showing us that while The Mexican Revolution improved various conditions, it also created new vices for the country.
4. 4. The Novel also focuses on the character Luis Cervantes who was a fellow member of Demetrio's band of rebels.
Being that is was mandatory for Luis to fight in the Federals Army , he ended up deserting the position because he was offended.
It’s interesting in how at the end of the novel, Luis flees to the United States because of how similar it of the events of the Author in real life.
Other important characters would include Don Monico who sent the federals after Demetrio which in turn was the cause of Demetrio joining the rebel forces.
War Paint the woman who was enamored by Towhead and War Paint’s enemy , Demetrio's girlfriend , Camiliawere key character as well in the novel.
5. 5. “The Alienist” by Caleb Carr
“The Alienist” is a crime novel that takes place in New York city in 1896 that revolves around a investigation of a serial killer who is targeting the young poor Immigrant boys of the city.
The Author uses Psychology as the key to cracking the gruesome murders, as well as incorporates the “new methods” of that era to find the killer such a fingerprinting.
To switch up the writing style of the novel, the author includes appearances by many famous figures of the era with figures like Theodore Roosevelt and J.P. Morgan.
6. 6. John Moore who is one of the 4 main characters of the novel, is the crime reporter who works on this case that is from The New York Times.
The famous Alienist of the novel is the character Dr. Laszlo Kreizler who is a unique and eclectic character that solves the mystery .
The third main character Theodore Roosevelt ,is the head of Police Commissioner who works together on the investigation case with the other leading 3 men.
The Author Caleb Carr admires Theodore Roosevelt so much that he created a character in honor of him.
The next character who was equally important was the character of Sara Howard.
Howard who was the first woman to be hired by the police department of that era who assisted as a detective alongside Dr. Kreizler
