• We can all recall/remember/know tracks that have defined Christmas… although the past few years have been defined by block buster TV shows… or a certain Mr Cowell!
• Big entertaining TV show. Music related – mostly covers. Towards the final singles are released. Finalist releases his or here debut as show is being broadcast. Example: Will Youngs Evergreen Number 11 best selling single of all time. A product of the Cowell juggernaut.
• … . And so is Susan Boyle. Whilst BBC Children in Need is not a Cowell venture – the huge publicity surrounding Children in Need will always help sell tracks. Remember ‘Is this the way to Amarillo’? This years is an amalgamation of children's TV characters from the past 40 years. It's number 1.
• The way the official charts has obviously changed over the years. It was April 2005 when digital downloads were included. A mere 4 and a bit years later digital accounts for nearly all the single sales in the UK and globally. And 2005 was the low point in single sales: w/e 25 th March 2005 to get to number one in the UK singels chart you had to sell 17,694 units… a feat achieved by Orson – No Tomorrow (last fm plays>>>674,082 plays (112,002 listeners) The prevoius low was Elvis Presleys rerelease of One Night/I got Stung and ‘sold’ 20,463 (last fm plays: 182,517 plays (64,343 listeners) – the lowest ever entry to #1 in the UK.
• As we now know 2005 was the defining year of the digital sale. 17 th April 2005 > Digital downloads included in charts So looking at this first year – the impact is immediately noticeable...
• And it continued – really this is one effect of the new rules that was expected and did materialise >> was the reappearance in the chart of a number of seasonal favourites in the run-up to Christmas 2007, in what looks set to become an annual event. In 2007 a total of 19 achieved this, without any being officially re-issued, and so reappeared on downloads alone. Two of these (by Mariah Carey and The Pogues ), reached the Top 5. Two more old yuletide songs, never previously hits in the UK, also charted, by Andy Williams and Perry Como . In the run-up to Christmas 2008, 11 Christmas titles returned to the Top 75; these included the Mariah Carey and Pogues songs, which both climbed as high as number 12 this time. In the run-up to Christmas 2009, the Mariah Carey and Pogues songs have reappeared yet again, though these are the only ones so far. Mariah : debuting at number 51 (5,592 sales), Pogues & Kirsty MacColl’s Fairytale Of New York (number 58, 4,607 sales). Both tracks debuted a fortnight earlier last year, and year-on-year their impact is in decline for the third year in a row.
• Does Christmas have an effect on listening? What do the 40 million users of Last fm do at Christmas? Massive and far reaching alterations of charts around Christmas and New Year. Thousands of Christmas tags. Thousands of taggers. Total flexibility to create your own tag > ‘Christmas party at Honeywell Road’
• Judging by our retailers you would be forgiven for thinking Christmas now begins in September – the first Tesco TV ad ran in September 2009. @ last it’s pretty consistent. November.
• First track to hit top 400 listened.
• A: Week ending 15 th November
• And its arrived with the classics… With the duet of Bing Crosby and David Bowie. Band Aid was there too.
• As we head into December the tracks come thick and fast – this was the rising tracks chart from w e 7 12 08 … Only 11 of the 120 movers were not Christmas related Traditional artists dominate The favs!
• Chris Rea Driving Home For Christmas
• Christmas ends quickly. By the end of Christmas week no tracks are rising the charts And in terms of absolute numbers:
• Killers!
• Halleluja – 1.3 million (BBC Charts 28.12.08)
• Alexandra Burke (also BONUS: biggest single of year – BBC Chart Show 28 12 08)
• Just as an aside… here are these four tracks stats on last fm. Poor old Steve Brookstein! It just shows what a world class act Leona is.
• A: 573,000 Data has been collated since 2005. This is four years worth. This years data will be fascinating as we are millions up on last year – including having access via the XBOX live platform. It’s worth noting for interest that Bing Crosby’s White Christmas is the second highest selling single of all time (30 million worldwide – Candle in Wind 97 by Elton John is number 1 at 37 million) but is not yet the biggest Christmas track on last fm.
• A: Week ending 15 th November
• To 8 12 09 Californicaition > 4,463,870 plays (655,167 listeners) Supermassive Black hole > 6,693,770 plays (639,178 listeners) Sex on Fire > 5,002,392 plays (513,974 listeners) Thriller > 2,278,208 plays (501,331 listeners)
