  12. 12. case studycathays high school, cardifflocationCathays High School is a mixed comprehensive school for11 to 19 year olds serving the heart of Cardiff. As is the casewith many progressive schools, Cathays High elects aSchool Council made up of elected representatives from allyear groups. They meet to discuss and act upon ideas toimprove the school. One wish passed on from all age groupswas to seek a method of improving the flushing of toilets.the projectResearch into ways of remedying this problem led toconsideration of Cistermiser’s ‘hands free’ flushing systemalready in successful use in other schools and colleges.Mr Gavin Bryant, the Schools Mechanical Advisory Officerfor Cardiff County Council suggested that Cistermiser beinvited to demonstrate the easyflush system, and thecompany immediately sent a team to the school to reviewthe problem first hand. The suggestion of using the Cistermisereasyflush system in the usual ‘wave’ mode, where the usersimply passes a hand in front of the infrared sensor toactivate a flush, was not considered wholly satisfactory.It was felt that this could be easily ignored as with manualflushing, so the team went back to talk to Cistermiser’sR & D Department, which was already investigating othermethods of flush activation.the solutionThe need was for a flush system that could be activatedautomatically without any effort on the part of the user.Cistermiser’s solution was to adopt the easyflush systembut with walkaway operation. Under this new mode ofoperation a flush is automatically triggered whenever auser gets up or walks away from the toilet. However it canalso be activated by the user bringing their hand towardthe sensor.The IR sensors operate on a dual flush system, deliveringa part flush if the user leaves within 40 seconds or a full flushif that period is exceeded. The ‘walkaway’ method issimple, hygienic and economical since it restricts wateruse to a minimum.As a trial the Cistermiser Team fitted four of the cubiclesused by the boys with easyflush valves with walkawayflush activation, and it has certainly solved the problemhighlighted by the students. The school was particularlypleased with the co-operation and personal service fromCistermiser, from the initial contact to the project’scompletion. The easyflush toilets have now been inoperation for nearly two years and have resulted in cleanertoilets and a more hygienic environment for the pupils.12

Students have a wide range of physicalconditions, including those that have an associatedlearning difficulty.The college also caters for students with degenerative orlife-limiting conditions. Many students who come to theCollege choose to board and because the halls aremanaged in a number of small units, staff and studentshave the opportunity to get to know each other well.There are five halls of residence, each with space forapproximately 32 students, and each hall has its team ofhighly qualified support staff.the projectBrewer House was built in July 2008 and it includes a£3.5million hall with 30 en-suite bedrooms and threecommunal bathrooms. It was designed by Fleet architecturalpractice McAllen & Penfold and built by Wilding ButlerConstruction Ltd of Winchester. Cistermiser worked closelywith the architects and assisted with the preparation of thespecification to ensure the appropriate user-friendlyequipment was specified. Cistermiser’s easyflush systemwas selected in 16 of the bathrooms.the solutionThis hands-free system completely eliminates the need torotate a handle or apply pressure on a button. It has provedimmensely popular in situations where elderly or less ablepeople are involved, and also in all sorts of publicinstallations for its damage and vandal-proof qualities.easyflush is a WRAS approved, hygienic and simple-to-useproduct that employs a single infrared sensor to operate adual flush WC valve. The user needs only to pass his or herhand slowly in front of the sensor for a part flush or hold itthere for more than a second to obtain a full flush.A 12-hour hygiene flush is fitted as standard. The systemconserves water as much as possible due to its default(programmable) part flush. In the case of the College,savings of 47% are expected both on costs and waterconsumption. The easyflush units supplied were installedusing battery power, which makes them very quick to installand easy to maintain.McAllen & Penfold then put Cistermiser in touch with TomDunsford of Accolade Building Services, who arranged a sitevisit so that the optimum positioning of the cisterns to beused could be established.
