5. STOP BEING
SLAVES
TO YOUR
PHONES!
By Hidaya Abdulla
There’s one thing I’d like to remind young
people. Imagine this: You are with your best
buddies, chilling, sharing stories and laughing.
Then all of a sudden, one person gets a text
message, and he/she replies to it. From then on,
you don’t hear a single word from the person.
The rest of your friends check their mobiles
too. You keep looking at them, dumbfounded…
and realize that, wait weren’t we talking to each
other?? Where has everyone’s attention gone?
You get the picture…
If you are planning to look at your mobiles all
day long, why even think about getting together
with your friends in the first place?! Sure, it’s
okay to reply to a message or two; but to be on
your mobiles 24/7? Not cool. Totally impolite.
It’s pretty frustrating when you try to socialize
with friends face to face but end up getting
trumped by their smartphones.
I say cherish each and every moment spent with
your friends - give them your full attention
rather than being slaves to your gadgets!
YOUTH ALERT
By Samarpan Chakraborty
A TEACHER
Neither am I only a singer,
Nor am I a listener just
I am the tears of ecstasy
Flowing from the eyes of the singer and listener
I am like a flower, blossoming from the dusty ruins
Of a destroyed heart, a corrupt mind
The blessings of a pure being, showering like
A bright sunlight, flowing into the pulse of life
None like him ever existed
None like my Teacher
His knowledge is like a rain of light into the barren darkness of our
materialised minds
Each drop, he bestows from his foot
I burst into the blissful splendour of spring
Beyond words, beyond me
Beyond the mind and body
He teaches me this
Ignorance, my greatest enemy
Consciousness, a powerful tool
Life, a great gift
Existence, a reliable guide
Blissfulness, a manifestation of true human nature
Humility, my common courtesy
Transformation, my only duty.

UNNATURAL
CREATURES
By Neil Gaiman,
HarperCollins, 2013
The supernatural is
little known. Some
say it doesn’t even
exist, that it should
be left to children’s
bedtime stories and
angsty Young Adult
novels. To those
individuals I say:
have a little faith. As
the mythical springs
from a certain truth wouldn’t categorizing
vampires, werewolves and Frankenstein in
the fictional be a hasty thing to do? Were
these creatures really subjects of creative—and
slightly delusional—authors?
However, these creatures—the most famous
of all!—are but a deceiving representation of
the unnatural, there are many unimaginable
creatures out there that we haven’t read about
yet. Until now.
Neil Gaiman presents this collection of short
stories that have never been published before
and goes further into literary archives to
enlighten the oblivious mortal of peculiar
beings like the sunbird and the griffin.
What is especially interesting about this
gallery of short stories is Gaiman’s eclectic
way in which he chose these various short
stories by authors of the past like E. Nesbit,
Saki and authors of the present like Neil
Gaiman himself and Diana Wynne Jones.
Some of these tales bring morals like “The
Cartographer Wasps and the Anarchist Bees”
by E. Lily Yu. Some of these tales are deeply
morose and cynical as well as frightening,
and some are witty and satirical. But what is
certain is that all are deeply entertaining.
For your part, Reader, I ask you to open your
mind to the possibility and the infinity of
the unknown in the realm of fiction or else
you will fail to enjoy this little collection. To
the skeptic, this compilation might remain
just another array of fictional tales from
authors you may or may have not known. To
the believer, this compilation will become a
sort of catalog of some of the many different
creatures out there. A little warning before
you go: don’t read this in the dead of night
because that is the time when these most
frightening creatures come to life.

9. Tempo’s Dorian “Paul D” Rogers
sat with award-winning actor
and film jack-of-all trades
Assem Kroma over coffee to
discuss his experiences and the
changing scene of film and the
performing arts in the UAE.
COFFEE AND
SHOWREEL
> PAUL D: How did you wind up in the UAE?
> ASSEM: I was raised in UAE and have spent
most of my life here. I spent some time in
Lebanon and Syria which added a lot of depth
and dimension to my personality because
I’ve met people from different background
and beliefs.
> PAUL D: I hear your mother was an
accomplished artist. What was her medium?
> ASSEM: She was a painter and one of the
people who started the artistic scene in UAE
through her association with the cultural
foundation. Three of her paintings traveled the
world in art galleries. She was a popular face on
UAE TV to teach art and cover the artistic scene
in the region. Yet, at some point she decided to
leave it all behind to ensure that her kids could
achieve their dreams.
> PAUL D: Did she push you towards the arts
at an early age?
> ASSEM: She never ‘pushed’ me but watched
over me, encouraging me to have hobbies,
especially reading. She taught me that art is a
lifestyle. You need to live it, not fake it, and that
art is something which comes out of your heart
to reach others. She sees art as being
about honesty.
> PAUL D: You’ve been involved in many
artistic forms, such as tap dancing, body beats,
Salsa, Tango, classical singing, experimental
theatre, scene study, method acting, filmmaking,
Meisner technique, standup comedy and
improvisation. Do you believe the saying, "A
jack of all trades and a master of none", or do you
think that all passions can be mastered with the
right amount of talent and dedication?
> ASSEM: I believe that there are no rules in
life. I don’t follow rules. I create them, but that
doesn’t mean that we are not supposed to have an
objective in life. Mine is acting before anything
else, and then comes writing and filmmaking.
What I always do is challenge myself, exploring
my abilities and sharpening my tools.
> PAUL D: I was really impressed with your
acting in "Tooth of Hope". Your handle on
comedy and drama allowed you to play a role in
which you made the audience both laugh and cry.
Do you find your real personality to possess these
serious and humorous dynamics, or is this a skill-
set acquired in acting?
> ASSEM: Waleed in “Tooth of Hope” has so
much of my personality, and yet, so much is
not me. But, as I said, we both have the same
original mix of components, starting with
both of us being human. The set of skills comes
down to how to build that character to become
a breathing human being, and how to be able
to express his feelings authentically without
forcing it.
> PAUL D: When it comes to film, you have
also written, produced, and directed your own
work. Do you prefer to be behind or in front of
the camera?
> ASSEM: Each has its own charm, but acting
will always be my most favorite part. It gives me
the chance to unite with humans, to touch their
lives and to give them moments of magic. I still
remember the amazing audience who stopped
me after each film to tell me how it made them
feel. Some even shared some very personal
feelings and stories with me.
> PAUL D: I know I was one of them! What is
your outlook on the film industry in the UAE?
Are you optimistic about its potential
for growth?
> ASSEM: I am very optimistic about it - it just
needs time, patience and loads of hard work. I
believe that we have huge pool of undiscovered
talent waiting to be discovered. Did you ever
imagine watching films like what you saw at the
latest local film festivals which were completely
created here to reflect our stories?
> PAUL D: The Meisner technique stresses
authenticity in acting. Most American actors/
actresses believe that you have to become
the character from within by undergoing
a psychological transformation, and other
disciplines believe that you simply have to
display the behavior of that character. What is
your approach to being genuine on stage or
in film?
> ASSEM: In short, I believe in turning
the character into a breathing human being
regardless of how you do that. I use all the skills
I acquired through my human experiences and
studying in different acting schools to come up
with a mixture which makes the character start
breathing. The moment I think for my character
then I have failed.
> PAUL D: How can a beginning actor or
actress get started in the UAE? What steps
would you recommend?
> ASSEM: First of all get rid of your ego. Be
ready to expose yourself because as Rosalind
Russell said, “Acting is standing up naked and
turning around very slowly.” So make sure that
you really want to act because if you are there for
the wrong reasons, you won't enjoy the process.
> PAUL D: And where do you see yourself
in five years?
> ASSEM: I see myself enjoying my current
journey and touching more lives while doing so.
How about you Paul?
> PAUL D: Hopefully here in the UAE still
meeting cool artists like you.

11. Samia and Amanda are two sisters that
share a deep connection with art. It’s
a business opportunity and yet, also
a passion that defines their personal
lives. Tempo visited Art Beat, a bright
and colourful studio where the duo
teaches art classes to children.
SAMIA: The idea for Art Studio was inspired by
my children. I’d been in Abu Dhabi for six years
now. I live here with my husband and my two
sons. And now my sister too. I used to work as a
management consultant until last year, but it got
too monotonous and I felt like I wasn’t getting
to spend time with my family. Naturally the
thought of starting up my own business seemed
almost like an ideal solution since business is
what I know best. Back in the UK, art studios
like these for children are very popular. I’d often
take my sons to these studios where they would
personalize mugs with their hand- prints to gift
to their aunts and uncles. That’s when the idea
of starting a similar concept in the UAE struck
me. But since art isn’t my forte, I approached my
little sister with the idea.
AMANDA: Art is my passion. I have a
bachelor’s degree in arts with illustration
honours, so it made sense to me when Samia
approached me with her business plan. It all
started in May last year when I was on my way
back to the UK from a vacation in India. Abu
Dhabi was just a stop on the way so I could catch
up with my sister and her family before heading
back home. Samia obviously has something else
in mind. She told me all about her idea the very
day I landed and somehow convinced me to
join her in Abu Dhabi and help her out with the
business. She’s my big sister, I didn’t really have
a choice now did I? (laughing) and besides I can’t
really say no to anything that involves Art.
SAMIA: Once I got my sister on-board I felt
even more confident about the idea. We started
working on it almost immediately. The first
step was getting an ideal location for the studio.
We had to pay six months’ rent up-front before
we even started. That was a real set-back and
financing wasn’t easy but we still managed. We
opened the studio last November and even had a
birthday party on the opening day!
AMANDA: Business picked up in January this
year. Since then we’ve had a lot of customers,
some are regulars and some school groups
too. Word spread about our studio and we also
circulated leaflets amongst friends. Business has
been good and we look forward to more visits
from schools and large groups.
SAMIA: Once we had a birthday party for a
little girl, I remember that so well. While they
were leaving, I heard her grandmother tell her
mother that it was by far the best birthday
she had organized for her daughter. Hearing
that made us so happy; knowing that we were
responsible for making the little girl’s day so
special. Feedback like that is what keeps us
motivated. We’ve received a lot of positive
feedback from schools and other customers on
our Facebook page too.
AMANDA: We thought starting up our own
business would give us more free time; however
that hasn’t been the case. This is like a full time
job. Even when we’re not here, we constantly
think of ways to expand and get more customers.
Another big challenge we’ve faced is getting the
required art supplies. All of the material we use
here is from the UK and Germany so we always
need to plan in advance to get the stock in time.
Also, the fact that it’s just the two of us handling
the studio affects our work- life balance.
SAMIA: There was an incident one day with a
lady asking for more than a hundred pieces of a
particular item which we didn’t have in stock and
she gave us only two days’ notice. We didn’t have
enough time to prepare so instead we suggested
other items and activities that she’d like. There’s
always a solution. Amanda’s been absolutely
wonderful, we support each other. My husband
and kids too have been extremely supportive
and have helped us think of new ideas for our
business.

> JUROR: BENO SARADZIC, an award-winning
photographer and one of the jurors, said: “It was a difficult
decision for all of us three judges to select one grand
prize winner as all the top four photos were excellent and
each deserved recognition in its own right. However we
selected Endurance because the angle was atypical, and the
photograph managed to capture movement, tradition and
diversity.”
> JUROR: DARREN RYCROFT added: “Each of the
judges had their own favourites - my personal one from the
top four was The Gaze, because of the intensity of the eyes,
the composition of the image and the quality of finishing.
We tallied all our votes to come up with the final winners.”
> SANA BAGERSH, CEO of BrandMoxie and patron
of the Abu Dhabi Photographers. “BrandMoxie is proud to
organize this event and offer patronage to the Abu Dhabi
Photographers. This group is extremely active, and clearly
has outstanding talents who need to be recognized and
celebrated. We hope to cement this in the UAE’s calendar of
events, and look forward to organizing it on a yearly basis.”
> SHAHID SAEED, founder of Abu Dhabi
Photographers said: “We were astounded by the level
of interest, the number of entries and the quality of the
submissions. Some of the photographers were from our
group, but the majority came from other emirates. I
believe the categories were appealing, and we believe very
appropriate in celebrating the rich culture of the UAE.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Sport photography is very different than any other
type of photography. You need a good camera,
high quality zoom lens with settings such as F2.8,
shutter at least 320 and high ISO 1000 plus. The
photographer has to be alert and ready to capture
the action at the right moment because you cannot
capture the image again.

17. Jefrey Fakhry was born to a civil
engineer father and an interior
architect mother, so perhaps it was
quite natural that he would pick
up a pen and start drawing. Just
16, the young Lebanese student is
recognized by his teachers and his
peers as a standout talent with a
bright future ahead.
“My main inspiration came from my mother.
She is a ‘complete’ artist, good at everything
from singing to drawing. Since I can remember,
I have always been attracted to her drawings and
always looked up to her. So I started reproducing
her artwork until I got enough experience to
do my own creations. She has always been very
supportive, and very involved.
“I usually prefer realistic drawings, especially
portraits, but I am trying to develop my work by
exploring other types of art such as landscapes
and abstract art. Lately I‘ve diversified from
simple graphite pencils into charcoal. Most of
my drawings are made using my imagination,
without referring to any other influences.
I would normally take up to two hours to
complete a portrait of an imaginary person, but
if I am using a photo as reference I can take four
to six hours.
“I sometimes try to inject a message into my
drawing, but that depends on my mood. When
I feel that something is wrong, my drawing
could be propose a solution of the problem -
like a drawing I made recently on recycling
that won a drawing competition. I have won
several competitions like the 2009th “Lebanon
spring” and the recycling drawing competition
at school in 2013. This confidence has helped
me secure exhibition space – in 2013 I displayed
my artwork at an exhibition in my school, the
British School Al Khubairat, on ‘optimism’ and
another entitled “unique art experience”.
“It’s sometimes hard to draw with new art tools,
and some subjects are still hard for me to draw
than others but I plan to work at it. I hope to
be going to college in France and becoming an
architect, but I always want to continue drawing
as a hobby.”

AN ODE TO
MY MOTHER
BOSTON UNIVERSITY
STUDENT ON THE
BOSTON BOMBINGSBy Manisha. R. Manikuttan
By Rhea Oommen
Her wide eyes filled with
love and serenity, her dark
brown colour skin glowing,
her sweet lips humming
beautiful songs and her warm
kiss on my forehead wishing
me a good day at school. My
mother.
Funny thing is that I used to think
of my mother as an irritating
person who drove me crazy by
giving me lectures on what to do
and what not to do. I scored good
marks in all my subjects, took
part in competitions and won a lot
of prizes. But the fact that I was
irresponsible in other ways annoyed my mother. From morning to
night, like a walking radio, she told me what to do and how not to be
dependent on her.
I never listened to her and became more and more dependent on
her. Sometimes we had heated arguments. But my carefree life was
soon brought to a stop when my mother had to fly home to nurse my
grandmother whose health condition was getting worse. Suddenly it
dawned on me that I had to spend a whole week alone looking after
myself. The night before her trip my mother lay awake all night,
worrying about leaving me behind to manage all house chores. I
slept well dreaming about the freedom I could acquire but little did I
know that I was going to have a week full of nightmares.
The nightmares hit hard. I missed two classes at school by getting
up late. I burned my fingers many times while cooking. My study
room looked more like a junkyard with huge bundles of books and
untidy papers scattered everywhere. My hands became rough from
cleaning. The only thing that satisfied me was that I lost my weight.
I didn’t mention any of my worries to my mom on the phone
knowing that she would cry, and that would have been unbearable to
me. By the end of the week I resolved to change. I learned to cook my
mother’s recipes by watching cooking shows, I learned to be more
responsible and the most important of all I realized the sacrifice my
mother made every day to take care of me.
I like to think that Manisha Version 2 was born of this situation.
Thankfully I am now more responsible and have learned to become
more dependent on my self. And on the day of my mother’s arrival I
hired a taxi and bought a bunch of pink roses and a card – all with my
pocket money. I headed towards the airport and when I spotted the
familiar face looking at me I broke down. The next moment all the
by standers were looking at an emotional mother-daughter scene.
I remembered the famous words of Honoré de Balzac: ‘The heart of
a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find
forgiveness’. At that moment in the airport, I knew she was ready to
forgive me.
On 10 June 2012, a year ago, I woke up at 11am in my
best friends bedroom, my hair messy and smelling like
perfume, my new black and gold dress in a crumpled state.
We had just got back from our Vegas themed prom at the
Allure nightclub in Yas Island only a few hours before.
As I looked into the bathroom mirror and removed my now scary
looking makeup and tried to imagine what I was going to experience
in the next few months. High school was officially over and my
ticket to Boston was booked for July 22. In a few months, I would be
a Boston University freshman!
I admit that when I stood in front of the mirror that day, I felt like I
didn’t deserve the opportunities that lay ahead of me. I had no idea
what I was going to study and I wasn’t the hardest worker in school
either. Someone was having a good day at BU a few months before
and decided to send me an acceptance letter.
Once I got to Boston I soon got with the programme and as the
months went by felt like I had been a student in Boston my whole
life. As the academic year was coming to an end and my last set of
finals were ahead, I was at a low point. I wasn’t the most proactive
freshman and I failed to make any good friends. I spent a lot of time
indoors doing nothing thanks to the frigid New England weather
and with no clear career goals ahead of me, I didn’t concentrate on
my studies. I needed more than an alarm clock to wake me up in the
mornings. I needed someone to shake my shoulders and tell me that
I should stop ‘dreaming’ and start ‘doing’.
And then the bomb exploded! No, really, two bombs exploded…
right at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, not too far from
our university. My mom texted an hour later, thankful that I wasn’t
the type to run marathons and for once, everyone in my family
was glad that I wasn’t that proactive girl who never missed a single
event. And while they were relieved, I was enlightened by that event.
I realised that I needed to do something with my life before it ended.
It was morbid, but it was a wake up call.
While am condemning the bombers for what they did, I am trying
to find the light this tragedy has brought on my life. And while I am
still not sure about what I’ll be doing after three years, I am so ready
for the first semester of sophomore year. Bring it on.
Rhea interned with Tempo this past summer. She is back at
Boston University to continue her studies.

400 DAYS OF AWWW
YEAAAAA! (SPOILER ALERT)
The Walking Dead DLC 400 Days
features five separate, but somewhat
overlapping, stories that all take place
within the first 400 days of the zombie
virus outbreak. There's a woman and
her younger sister, another woman who is also a recovering drug addict, a
young college aged kid, an ex-con (guy) and a hipster dude.
You play each character in a mini games of about 10 minutes long and
then play a sixth character that interacts with all of them. The ending of
the game, while not a massive cliff hanger, is still cleverly done and forces
you - happily - to play until you get it right. Get what right, you ask? I'll get
to that.
As you know, TWD is heavily based on your choices - this DLC is no
different and leans heavy on the morality of your choices. In just about all
the games you are really conflicted about which decision to make - both
in terms of the ethics and in terms of your gaming strategy. All the while,
you kind of get the impression that your choices will come back to haunt
you once season 2 rolls around.
That said, by the end of the game a sixth character - Tavi - turns up to offer
everyone (all five characters have ended up surviving together) the chance
to join a growing commune (who, where, what, when we don't know). It's
obvious that the choices you make in the games and the choices you make
as Tavi -affect who chooses to join the commune. You can get everyone
to join if you play it right. And I think I have that pretty well figured out.
Drop me a line on the blog if you want to know.
WHAT DOES 400 DAYS SAY ABOUT SEASON 2?
This is a good question. It looks like Clem may not even appear in Season
2 - and that wouldn't be cool. I say that only because of this brand new
cast of characters. Why introduce so many new characters if not to start
a brand new story? Either that or they just become minor characters in
(hopefully) Clem’s story.
Of course you are left to wonder which commune you're heading to - is it
the infamous Governor's town? Will we see more characters from the TV
show and comic book? I say we will see more TV characters, and I predict
that gamers will be able to make choices about what happens to minor
characters based gaming stats. Remember you heard it hear first.
Get it. It's available for PS, XBox and PC.

SPOTLIGHT ON
THE CAPITAL LIST
By Sanah Chauhan
COMMUNITY
Melanie Carpenter is General Manager of The Capital List, a website dedicated to
covering Abu Dhabi’s nightlife scene. The 38-year-old Australian moved to
Abu Dhabi in 2011 and lives here with her husband and two children. She told
Tempo how she got involved with thecapitallist.ae and what makes it special.
“It was a case of being in the right place at the right time! The idea for The Capital List came from the
owner, Darrell Jacques, who had been working nightlife events in Abu Dhabi for about three years; he
saw a gap in the market for a website dedicated to Abu Dhabi nightlife, as many of the promoters and
DJs were doing good things but he felt it just needed to be brought together into one place. The other
publications at the time weren’t focused solely on nightlife, and the information they provided was
often out of date.
“I met Darrell when I was out at one of his
nights, we got talking, I sent my CV to him,
and he hired me on the spot to develop and
market the site. I worked on everything from
the ground up – the specs and development of
the site, the branding and marketing, the social
media, as well as developing relationships with
all of the key hospitality, promoter and DJ
contacts in Abu Dhabi. It was the perfect role
for me given my marketing and IT background,
(and my love of music and going out!). I started
on the project in August 2011, and we went live
on December 13, 2011.
“The Capital List has come a long way! The first
phase of the site went live in December 2011,
and we launched Phase 2 of the site in August
last year, which was a complete rewrite of the
site, but also introduced new functionality. Our
weekly nightlife newsletter is distributed to
around 28,000 contacts each week, and we now
average around 3500 visitors per week.
“We’re in constant contact with all nightlife
venues, promoters and event organisers, and
are now the most reliable and up-to-date source
of information for everything going on in Abu
Dhabi’s nightlife. We also recently launched The
Capital List TV on YouTube, which is a great step
forward for promoting Abu Dhabi nightlife. We
have some massive plans for the site in the near
future; at the moment they are all hush hush,
but Abu Dhabi Tempo will be the first to know
about it when we’re ready to tell Abu Dhabi.
“Abu Dhabi nightlife took a hit when
a lot of people left because of the cost
of accommodation, and now, as more
accommodation becomes available and prices
are coming down, this is starting to reverse.
We’re also likely see a resurgence of people here
as the economy continues to grow, especially
with the latest government mandate requiring
people who work for a government owned
company to be based here.
Most nightlife venues in Abu Dhabi (and the
UAE in general) tend play a mix of urban (R&B
and hip hop) and commercial/pop music. I’m a
big house music fan (more specifically deep and
tech house, and when I go clubbing, techno), so
personally, I’d love to see more nights like that
here, but unfortunately (for me), there’s not
really the market here for it (yet!). Blue Marlin
Ibiza UAE (which although is closer to Dubai is
technically in Abu Dhabi), is constantly bringing
big name artists to its shores.
I’ve also noticed recently that there are more
independent promoters popping up and
organising events too. Pool parties are always
popular when the weather is good. There’s really
more going on in Abu Dhabi than people realise,
and we’re making sure the world knows about
it! There are new venues opening all the time,
and more people moving to Abu Dhabi, so it will
be interesting to see how the nightlife industry
develops here over the next few years.

But don’t let that stop you from achieving your
career goals, whether you are an entrepreneur
or working your way up in an organization.
Remembering why you work can help you
overcome working Mom’s guilt.
1) CREATE A LIST OF REASONS
YOU WORK.
It is different for each person, but for me it is a
combination of satisfaction, money and sanity!
Giving birth to three kids in three and a half
years while living overseas away from family, I
found work gave me professional fulfillment,
helped pay for the extra expenses of having a
family and kept me sane. Has it been easy? No.
Worth it? Absolutely.
2) DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO
OTHER MOMS. FOCUS ON DOING
WHAT IS BEST FOR YOUR FAMILY.
Yes, it is true sometimes the scrutiny we receive
from other mothers seems like they are the self-
appointed parenting police. That combined with
experts on TV and in magazines who bombard
us with advice on how to be a super mom can
make anyone feel inadequate. The fact is there
is no right way to raise children. You have to do
what is best for your family and circumstances.
Sure you won’t make every concert, play or
sports game, but that does not mean you love
them any less. With everyone filming on smart
phones these days, you can often see the missed
event on video. I find this a great way to connect
with kids as they see the pride in your eyes
as you view it together. Plus they love seeing
themselves on video.
3) BE FULLY PRESENT WHEN YOU
ARE WITH YOUR CHILDREN.
This means minimize the multi-tasking (so
no checking work or personal emails on the
phone while you are out with your kids). In a
24/7 working world, it is not easy to turn off
from work, but it is important for your sanity
and also for your children. By giving your full
attention to them, you show your kids through
your actions that they are important to you.
Without a break from work, your productivity
suffers on both ends. Now that it is summer time
with kids home from school and many families
taking vacations together, it is important to
enjoy that quality time with your kids and create
wonderful memories together.
Remember it is WHO we are for our children –
happy, healthy role models - that will influence
them more than what our house looks like or
how many gadgets we have.

Carly Simon once sang about Warren Beatty, “You’re so vain, you
probably think this song is about you, you’re so vain...”
I would like to dedicate this month’s space to a dear friend of the
emergency room, who has recently left us to pursue “better pastures”.
Lets call this individual “Pat”.
Pat was a staff member who I had the honor of working alongside for the
past several years. (S)he was a staple and admired by many for her/his
dedication and academic prowess.
Always on time, dressed immaculately and ready for business, Pat
was confident in all situations and slick with critical dying patients. A
chosen leader for the trainee staff, Pat is one who probably left quite a
memorable impression on them.
I never had the chance to say goodbye, but if I did, this is how it may
have gone.....
Although you possess fantastic nursing skills, I suspect that your
malignant personality will definitely outshine any talent you possess.
Good luck with that.
Ah, the memories..... So many of them, I could go on for ages about Pat,
but the bottom line is that I am glad to see the back of you. I hope that
you spread your transparent disingenuous demeanor to others, that you
have so proudly bestowed upon me, my colleagues, some of your own
colleagues and patients alike. Your sarcastic smile and readiness to be
rude will not be missed.
It is a pleasure to know that soon you will be sharing these positive
personality traits with others in an environment where such behaviors
generally have a zero tolerance policy and where patients are not in the
least afraid to speak their minds.
Vaya con dios, I see a bright future ahead.
PS- Dear Reader,
I’m just fooling, it’s just a simple love letter to hospital life.

HASTA LUEGO
SUSTAINABLE CULTURE
With the news
announcement that the
new Louvre building in
Abu Dhabi is achieving
a three-pearl Estidama
Sustainability rating,
we take a closer look at
sustainability culture in
the UAE.
They say everyone loves a bit of
retail therapy, and now there is
somewhere in Dubai called the
Change Initiative, where you
can shop without damaging our
environment. The Change Initiative is known for its sustainable shopping
offerings and has now been LEED Platinum certified, making it one
of the most sustainable buildings in the world. The Change Initiative
offers a range of sustainably sourced food, a range of household items,
as well as jewellery. Even Jotun has a section in the store dedicated to
environmentally friendly paints. There is also a café, The Taste Initiative,
which offers food made with local ingredients.
You may remember that Abu Dhabi too, as part of the Volvo Ocean Race,
organised a series of beach clean ups with the aim of turning rubbish into
environmentally poignant artwork. This was done at each of the host ports
along the race, and resulted in some interesting artwork. The sculptures
made in Abu Dhabi are now in the offices of some of the country’s oil
companies, helping to remind the employees to keep the oceans clean.
Now Abu Dhabi prepares to launch one of the most exciting projects
in the region with the Louvre, and more so that the building has been
certified under the Urban Planning Council’s Estidama rating system.
This means that the building will not require as much energy to maintain
its temperature, thanks to the innovative dome design and the choice of
material for the walls. Hopefully, other buildings on the Cultural District
of Saadiyat island will live up to the standard set by the Louvre, and
emulate its principles.
Going forward, one of the most important things for the UAE to consider
is where our food is going to come from. With most of our fresh fruit and
vegetables imported from around the world (it made me laugh recently on
holiday to find the same raspberries in New York as in the supermarket
here), it is important that the UAE develops its own agriculture to the
point where we no longer have to rely on foreign imports. An encouraging
project called Local Harvest and run by the Abu Dhabi Farmer’s Service
Center, is aiming to promote local produce in our supermarkets, while
aiding farmers in getting their produce on the supermarket shelves.
With all of these exciting projects gaining momentum in the UAE, we
will hopefully be able to build on these important steps towards a more
sustainable future.

REPUTATION ON THE LINE:
DO YOU LEAVE A GOOD IMPRESSION?
When you are starting a business,
one of the most important things
you will need to develop is a
‘reputation’. Reputation comes in
many forms – it can be a reputation
for being easy to work with, a
reputation for being on-time for
appointments, a reputation for
meeting deadlines, a reputation for
being a good employer, and so on.
In the initial stages, as you reach out for clients
to build your business, referrals will be critical,
and these referrals will be offered more freely
if you cultivate a positive reputation. Examples
of this are the timeliness in which you respond
to emails and quotation requests, the way you
handle job applications or the efficiency in
paying supplier accounts. All these can impact
what other people think of you and your
business. These things all count toward creating
a positive reputation, which is vital for start-ups.
Whether they are correct or not, we all form
opinions of people and companies based on
our interactions with them, no matter how
limited that contact is. Emails not answered,
phone calls not returned and staff that are not
flexible in responding to customer requests can
all contribute to a company developing a poor
reputation.
It is easy to fall into the trap of not doing the
small things when you are busy establishing
your business especially if you have minimal
staff. These lesser details may not be important
to you, but they can be significant for someone
else; for example, consider a job applicant, eager
for a position, who sits and waits for weeks
because you forget to send a quick email that can
be created via a simple template.
Forging a good reputation is deceptively easy.
It is a matter of taking a few minutes to do the
decent thing by people – after all, as a customer,
you would expect the same thing in return. In
a world of hungry competition, there is always
another company willing to fill the breach if
your business falls down.
SO HERE ARE 10
SIMPLE, COMMON-
SENSE TIPS TO HELP
BUILD A GOOD
REPUTATION:
Set up templates to respond1.

emails, such as common customer

and so on
Ensure there is an efficient2.

grace – the customer may come
back to you eventually if you

In July I went to Spain to attend the wedding
party for a woman I had met two years ago in
Abu Dhabi. Elizabeth Villagomez was married
to Guillermo in Victoria, British Columbia,
inconvenient for her European friends and
myself as well. So I decided that coming to
the party near Madrid was a good way to see
Elizabeth and meet her new husband.
Years ago I read Washington Irving’s Tales of the
Alhambra and thought it would be interesting
to visit the site. Twenty years later in Abu Dhabi
one of my students at Zayed University wrote
a long story with many photographs about her
trip to Granada for the student magazine ZU
Mirror.
I loved her story, and it reminded how much I
wanted to see the remains of Moorish culture
and the Moorish aspects of the Christian palaces
and churches that followed. Going to Madrid
for Elizabeth’s party was the perfect moment
to visit Andalusia, not only Granada but also
Cordoba and Seville.
For three days based in SevilleI took all-day tours
to Granada and Cordoba and a half-day tour of
Seville itself. Excellent guides throughout – in
Granada a Bulgarian woman who spoke perfect
Italian, Spanish, and English – highlighted
features of Moorish culture like low gardens
with running water and their changes under the
Christian kings.
Since most of the artisans and builders were
themselves descendants of the Moors, the
Christian palaces and cathedrals retained many
of the artistic elements typical of Muslim
Andalusia.
For example, the gardens outside the Generalife,
the summer palace of the Christian kings, are
typically Moorish in style with long pools and
water flowing quietly.
Washington Irving’s role in preserving the
Alhambra which was neglected in the 19th
century is commemorated by this plaque over
the door of the room where he wrote and slept.
After Andalusia came Madrid where I arrived
on a Friday evening to link up with Irene
McMullan, another friend from Abu Dhabi, who
had left the UAE only two weeks earlier. Like
me, she wanted to see Elizabeth again and get to
know Guillermo.

EXPERIENCE: AFTER THE UAE
After you spend eight years in a foreign country and then go back to your own country, what you
do continues to be affected by your experience abroad. I lived in Abu Dhabi from August 6, 2005 to
March 20, 2013 and taught at universities there and in Dubai.

30. …I’m constantly asked what
it’s like being a self-published
author in this New Age of instant
communication on the SOSYAL
NETWURKIN whirl… each time
the question is raised, I have a
range of different responses, but
they all funnel back into the same
idiom… for an independent writer,
it’s all about continuing to BUILD
THE PLATFORM… engaging as
wide an audience as possible on
my channels of choice—Twitter,
Facebook, LinkedIn, Goodreads,
and my Blog… and it demands a
discipline… a stamina for daily
attention to these outlets…on my
library shelves, adjacent to a well-
thumbed Webster’s lexicon and the
Idiot’s Guide to Learning 3 Chords
for Guitar (Spanish, the plonking
use of, for), sits my collection of
Master John Steinbeck’s best,
a miscellany of Chuck Dickens’
works, and sundry other superb
proponents of the scribbler’s
art…pride of place, however, is
steadfastly reserved for just about
everything imaginable written by
and written about, Sir Winston
S. Churchill, including his rather
splendid four-volume offering, ‘The
History of the English Speaking
Peoples’, for which he knobbled
(Nobelled?) the Award of the
Nobel Prize for Literature…why? I
hear you ask, is Master Gallacher
rabbiting on about his bookshelf
population, and particularly
a long-deceased British Prime
Minister?…quite simply this—
the finest phrase to come from
ANYstatesperson’s mouth belongs
to old Winnie…NEVER EVER
GIVE UP…I’ll say that again for
those of you snoozing at the back,
there…NEVER EVER GIVE UP…I
have tried all my life, and not
always successfully, to follow that
dictate…but I’ve found that when I
DO stick with something I believe
to be worthwhile, the payoff is
incredible gratifying…relevance?
Master Gallacher, relevance??…
get on with it…the relevance is
this…having bumbled my way
into this curiouser and curiouser
labyrinth of self-publishing
author-dom, there have been many
(call that hundreds) of ‘crossroads
moments’, any one of which could
easily have meant just packing it
all in and doing something simpler,
like climbing Everest backwards,
or finding an honest politician…
but Winnie’s growl kept rumbling
away in the background there…
and I’m delighted it did…to date,
the trappings of being a writer
include eye-bags under my eye-
bags under my eye-bags, insane
mental committee meetings in
my sleep of characters from my
novel, (yes, Matron, I KNOW you
record these), and an irrational
but very tangible love for each and
every one of the fabulous internet
relationships I currently enjoy
bantering with…step by faltering
step, the masochistic manuscript
marathon has led to Amazon
Kindle best-selling success, and
regularly seeing my beautiful
little printed offspring decorate
the shelves of the commercial
bookstores in Abu Dhabi…where it
leads next, only a band of gypsies
with a dozen crystal balls could
possibly foresee…and here’s the
rub…I don’t care where it is, just
so long as it IS…all of you intrepid
fellow quill-scratchers out there
will know the feeling…I exhort
you to imagine a deep, gravelly,
throaty, cigar- and brandy-
edged bass voice in your head,
muttering…NEVER EVER GIVE
UP…I know Matron…I know...
yes...I’m getting back to bed now…
