  14. 14. Video Editing The only way to do it… is to do it.
  15. 15. Choosing a video editing program…
  16. 16. Photo by Elvis Kennedy
  17. 17. Starting to use a video editing program…
  18. 18. Photo by Joe Benjamin
  19. 19. Let’s start with: What is editing?
  20. 20. "Editing in its simplest form is this: Take a video you’ve shot and cut out all the parts you don’t like." - Steve Stockman
  21. 21. Everything is “less” than you think. (exercise of breaking down shots in a commercial you like)
  22. 22. Every shot in the final video should matter.
  23. 23. “Motion and Emotion” Why is this shot interesting?
  24. 24. Get started with editing
  25. 25. I hate to break it to you but…
  26. 26. It’s probably not going to be great the first time around. And that’s ok.
  27. 27. To learn, you must actually do it. Do. Reflect. Do. Reflect. Do. Reflect. Do. Reflect…
  28. 28. Basic features (examples) • Add video (duh!) • Trim and split video clips • Add text • Add additional audio (e.g. background music, voice over) • Transitions (basic) • Effects (basic)
  29. 29. Beyond basic features (examples) • Editing to the frame level • Different edit controls (ripple, rolling, slip, slide) • Multiple layers / tracks • Color correction • Chroma Key (green screening) • Multiple timelines and sequences • Subtitle support
  30. 30. The most important part of choosing video editing software is… …to choose something and start trying to use it. (trial versions are fine)
  31. 31. Examples of video editing software Free • YouTube Video Editor • Windows Movie Maker • iMovie Low-ish price • Adobe Premiere Elements • Camtasia Studio Full editing programs • Adobe Premiere Pro • Final Cut Pro
  32. 32. Learning what makes a good (single) edit? Do you “notice” the edit? (changing standards online)
  33. 33. Keep it simple… …particularly with effects and transitions. Showing off is not a good look – it’s distracting.
  34. 34. Making footage easier to edit It can be overwhelming to go through a lot of footage! • Shoot short, purposeful shots (~10 seconds) • Delete footage that you’re definitely not using • Use descriptive file names
