Film Poster Research

 1. 1. Ancillary Task 1: A film poster (for a quirky independent)
 2. 2.

Use of round friendly lower case font. Positioned aside actors names and billing board to appear concise and neat.

Strong themes of isolation highlighted by use of empty seats and single suitcase. Suggestion of character-led plot.

Importantance of setting. Airport or train station to stress travel themes.

 3. 3.

Handwritten appearance- suggests a more handmade approach rather than a huge shiny commercial production. Also feels more personal to the characters.

Use of pictures to build up sun, positive imagery and emphasis on characters. Man on the hill beside pictures make it appear personal specifically to him- dreamy feel.

Actors names kept small and tucked neatly out of sight appears more sophisticated also reflects their status as lesser known.

Light pastel shades, blue and yellow on white. A sunny disposition and the idea of the sun in the sky hopeful and vaguely whimsical.

 4. 4.

Yellow and blue- almost complimentary colours. Large bold text a vaguely positive feel but non-specific in terms of genre.

Bold on ‘John Lennon’ to found subject and the image of a school boy at the forefront papers and guitar founds primitive circumstances.

Background characters faintly in words like ghostly figures of the past.

Use of review quotes, repeated four stars to imply an award winning film also emphasised by the billing of the director over actors.

 5. 5.

More images and more information than most, relatively complex.

Emphasis on positive reviews over actors and reliance on ‘from the director of’

Suggestion of character based plot. Choice of optimistic vaguely comical images.

Coffee stains, imposed writing and the like, homely appearence

 6. 6.

Again the use of yellow and blue. Blue seems dreamy and hopeful and yellow suggests the sunny disposition typical of these kind of films.

The wording is in that plucky hand-drawn style. There are two taglines either side of the title to give a simple idea of the plot premises complimented by one picture at the top of the poster quirkily positioned upside down.

Intriguingly there is no mention of the actors names there isn’t even a billing block again the poster films this space only with a few awards it’s won.
