In today’s increasing and intense world of growing technology, Smartphones have become the modern businessman’s best friends. With smart phones it has made communication very easy in terms of sending important e-mails, accessing the internet at a faster speed, downloads, social networking as well as instant chats. This has proven beneficial in more ways then one but also a clear distraction. The Wikipedia definition of a smartphone is “ A Smartphone is a mobile phone offering advanced capabilities, often with PC-like functionality (PC-mobile handset converge).” Smartphones were orginally made for business men and women but through their new found popularity, smartphones have made way through to housewives, students and teenagers, making the whole communication process more efficient, even perhaps a distraction. Why would I consider it to be a “distraction”? Take a look and the presentation that will briefly explain the basic smartphone as well as my conclusion/answer to the statement above this slide.
Q. What does PDA stand mean? “ Personal Digital Assistance” - A PDA is a handheld device that organizes your life keeping your contacts, events and calendar dates well organized and up-to-date. Also, PDA devices are known to include software devices you would normally find on a office computer such as word processing and spreadsheet. Purchasing a Smartphone would allow you to always stay a step ahead with technology, as well as, (considering yourself as a business man or women), staying in touch with your clients. We all know digital technology is increasing in the world therefore, what better way to represent your way then with a Smartphone. Being able to multi task has never been made easier, you are able to keep your business or other arrangements in control with a Smartphone. You could be on the beach with your family, or on a business trip managing important deals while still playing your role in the office.
Research has shown that ,with the high requests of smartphones that it has now become a new trend within users and customers all over the world. Smartphones such as Iphone and RIM have the greatest impact on buyers making their brand well-known amongst the world. Hence, smartphones have a strong influence.
Due to greater functionality built in to smartphones, they are able to do things quicker then normal mobile phones making them advantageous. Keeping organized in terms of personal organizers, electronic diaries, contact lists, and automatic reminders. Flexible working in terms of note taking, review and edit personal appointments, contacts & documents. Information at your finger tips i.e. access to maps and directions to television transmissions with news coverage & weather reports. You are “Never Out of Reach” with constant internet connection, capability of connecting to your PC. “Better information sharing” in terms of being able to send large e-mails and data attachments. “Greater functionality” quick technology with new advances features of being able to “snap & send” pictures. “Faster communication” with internet bundles if having you internet “always on”. They are made as a strong business tool through their “all-in-one” feature of being a portable PC, digital camera and a phone.
Small screen size- smart phones generally measure just a few inches wide and in length. Accessing emails and websites become generally difficult to read due to scrolling up, down, left and right to grasp the hole content of the website which becomes time consuming as well as confusing. Awkward keyboard size, those with larger hands find it particularly challenging to type with the small size keys. High Cost, smartphones are generally pricey and require subscription payment to be made in order to allow access to internet and email privileges, these costs vary from monthly to weekly payments. Website access, Wireless Access Portal, otherwise known as WAP uses software to optimize and adjust the websites to fit to the screen size thus some websites are not WAP enabled therefore discouraging the viewer accessing certain sites as well as images. Addictive, smartphones are small and generally extremely portable making it convenient for them to be taken anyway with you, with that said, smartphones have been known to be extremely addictive in terms of constant checking of emails, surfing the web, IM (Instant Messaging), therefore making it hard to balance work life and social life.
Here is a cartoon strip illustrating the intensity of the addiction that comes with smartphones. Although humorous these cases are rather sever and can cause great attention spam problems as well as poor productivity in the work place.
I believe that if smartphones were only to stay amongst the business world with only business users then they wouldn’t be any strong defects such as the previously mentioned of addiction or the case of effects in productivity, social engagement as well as communication errors. As the smart phone carted to other customers outside the business world I feel that is when over use and effects occurred. I agree with the statement of smartphones effecting communication in terms of realistically always finding people on their phones, discouraging natural conversation between two people (face to face). Social networking has taken over the traditional methods of getting to know new people hence the great effect in education, students would rather converse on their phone or find the latest sport scores. Technology has become to widely available and with the introduction of smartphones, providing more of a greater risk in productivity, education and social engagement. Yes, I agree with the statement made in slide 1.
“ Research has found that Smartphones are affecting productivity, communication in the work place, social engagement, and have an effect in education”.
