65. Boolean Queries
(ebola OR #ebola OR #ebolavirus OR #stopebola OR
#EbolainNYC) AND ("new york" OR "new york city"
OR NY OR NYC OR Brooklyn OR Queens OR Bronx OR
Manhattan OR "Staten Island" OR SI OR BK OR BX OR

66. VOST Consideration
• VOST = Virtual Operations Support Team
• External to agency
• Team of volunteers activated to perform specific
social media functions in support of an affected
organization and/or jurisdiction
• Each VOST has Team Leader that reports directly to
the affected organization/agency
• Future Project - DOHMH may train group of NYC
MRC volunteers to assist w/ monitoring, but also:
– Message amplification
– Use their language skills
– Other platforms
67. Value of Social Media Monitoring
• Real-time situational awareness
• Get a feel for public sentiment
• Good way to get feedback on
public messaging
• Informs your message
development
• Combat major rumors and
misinformation by public and news
media
April 2014 had the opportunity to present on the development of our SMMT and how we used in in a few minor emergencies like Hepatitis A Points of Distribution
EX: During 2015 Legionnaires’ outbreak in the South Bronx, numerous questions persisted on Twitter about the safety of drinking water or visiting the area as well as if the disease was contagious. Although those questions were addressed initially, it displayed the importance of repeating the same messages often and in different ways to ensure understanding and to alleviate anxiety of residents and visitors.

Most interesting day of my Public Health career – was serving as Liaison Officer that day
What made this most interesting is the man decided to travel all over the city the day before his fever.
Though it was published at 2:44 the New York Post account did not tweet it out at same time
Many of these rumors originated in W. Africa – but due to large communities who follow news back home, there was activity in NYC as well reiterate there is no cure in messaging
People shouldn’t be angry with him
SADLY TOPSY WAS LAID TO REST
--no noise; only actionable information based on analysis of full firehose, not just a bunch of key words;
--not just geotagged tweets; Dataminr predicts the location of up to 60% of the Twitter firehose, providing a much richer data set for users then the typical 2-3% of geotagged data that most other technologies have access to.
