Talwalkars - Getting enough snooze time may be the best diet secret

  1. 1. Getting Enough Snooze Time May Be The Best Diet SecretWe spend so much of our time on nutrition and training only to neglect a factor that is at least ofequal importance sleep.During sleep high quantities of growth hormone (GH) are pumped out into our blood stream. GH isvital for tissue repair, especially muscle tissue. GH and also helps in utilization of fat for energy.Cortisol is a catabolic hormone that stimulates the breakdown of protein in the muscles into glucoseand glycogen. High levels of cortisol are also associated with abdominal fat gain. Sleep decreases thelevels of the hormone cortisol.Lack of sleep can lead to a decrease in insulin sensitivity. When you become more insulin resistant itmeans less glucose gets transported to muscle cells, which in turn means less protein synthesissparking off less muscle growth. Poor insulin sensitivity also causes the body to more readily storeenergy as fat.Sleep is the primary time when central nervous system (CNS) recovers from any stresses or strains.Quite simply, if you’re not getting adequate quality sleep, you’ll be short changing yourself in anygoals to build muscle and get lean.So How Much Sleep Do I Need?A good rule of thumb is sleep enough so that you have good levels of energy and mood throughoutthe day. If you feel strong urges to sleep during the day, you aren’t getting enough sleep. In short, sleep enough so you don’t feel sluggish in the daytime, but not so much that you have problemsgetting to sleep in the night. If you stick by those guidelines you won’t go far wrong. But Don’t Forget about Quality of SleepThere’s no point packing in hours of sleep if that quality of that sleep is poor. It’s only during deepsleep that GH peaks and muscle repair and growth swings into full action. So there you have it. If your training and nutrition is dialed in then by increasing the quality of yoursleep and sleeping the amount of time your body needs you’ll prime your body for muscle growthand fat loss.Long-term sleep loss is related to an increase in diabetes and obesity. In other words if you can’ttrain out of a bad diet you cannot reap the benefits of eating smart and exercising tactfully if youdon’t get enough sleep.A chronic lack of sleep wastes all of your other good fat loss focused work.Lack of sleep affects a number of metabolism influencing areas: your energy levels, your appetitecontrol and insulin sensitivity.Even partial sleep deprivation can manipulate some of the key hormones that impact fat loss. Inparticular when key hormones are affected it predisposes you to fat storage and obesity by causinginsulin resistance. If you want to lose weight, you should make sure that you are getting sufficient sleep in addition tofollowing a healthy diet and exercise program. For most of us, sleep more to lose fat.
