The Leveson Inquiry

  2. 2. WHAT IS THE LEVESON INQUIRY? The Leveson Inquiry looked at the relationship between the press and the public, including phone-hacking of celebrities who’s voicemails were hacked and many messages were deleted and other potentially illegal behaviour. It is chaired by Lord Justice Leveson after being appointed in July 2011 This whole inquiry started after the phone-hacking scandal with Rupert Murdoch.
  3. 3. AN EVENT RELATING TO THE INQUIRY An important event that happened backs up as to why the Leveson Inquiry should take place. A radio station in Australia prank called the hospital in which the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, was staying. The prank elevated where the nurses at the hospital believed that the presenters were the Queen and Prince of England, and shared out important information about the Duchess’ health on air in Australia.
  4. 4. THE CONSEQUENCE In the case of the Australian presenters, they intervened into someone’s personal life and caused them distress. As a result of this and many other certain similar events (i.e. the phonehacking scandal with Rupert Murdoch), the Leveson Inquiry took place to prevent ethical standards from being broken further.
  5. 5. WHAT I LEARNT FROM THE LEVESON INQUIRY: The inquiry was a way of regulating the Press. There are basic rules and standards the press, journalists and members that work in the sector of Media must follow. Although this was a newspaper report, the same rules still apply to a radio journalist too.
