PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I want to welcome you all to our 18th
Annual Captains of Industry Gala. In
2017, Tabor 100 continues to be strong
and offer new and better opportunities
to our members.
I have been blessed to receive the support
and goodwill from all of you as I and the
Tabor Board work diligently to ensure equity
and fairness for the minority community.
While progress never happens as quickly as we might
want, with your support, we have seen positive gains for minority businesses
this year, even in the midst of some political turmoil. Tabor 100 has been a part
of most efforts to improve the minority business climate.
Let me highlight a few notable achievements, including: More opportunities
for small and diverse businesses in the lucrative concessions awards at Sea-Tac,
the Port awarding its large taxi contract to a minority firm, Sound Transit doing
an outstanding job on both the minority jobs and business sides, the State
Department of Transportation working to include our firms as it spends $16
billion and the city of Seattle enhancing its aggressive effort at women and
minority business inclusion.
Tabor 100 views initiatives in Olympia, at the City and in other government
entities to be the most critical actions impacting our businesses. As a result of
Tabor’s engagement, this Governor implemented a first-ever disparity study
and sought an Attorney General’s opinion on our major nemesis — I-200.
This opinion, along with the results of the study, should strengthen minority
businesses.
There are too many accomplishments over the last year to mention them all.
Regardless, the trend is a good one and we look to tout even bigger and better
milestones at our 19th Annual Captains of Industry Gala.

DISTINGUISHED PANEL
Governor Jay Inslee: Inslee was born in Seattle,
Washington. He attended Stanford University from
1969 to 1970, earned his B.A. from the Universi-
ty of Washington in 1972, and earned a J.D. from
Willamette University School of Law in 1976. Inslee
represented Washington’s 4th Congressional District
from 1993-1995 and was a member of the state
House from 1988-1992. Inslee is the 23rd and current
Governor of Washington.
Congressman Adam Smith: Adam Smith was
born in Washington, D.C. and raised in SeaTac,
Washington. Smith attended Western Washington
University, transferred to Fordham University where
he graduated with a degree in Political Science, and
then graduated with his law degree from University
of Washington School of Law in 1990. When he took
office in January 1991, Smith was 25 years old and
the youngest State Senator in the country. Now in his
11th term, Adam serves as Ranking Member of the
House Armed Services Committee.
Seattle City Attorney Peter Holmes: Pete
Holmes, now in his second term as Seattle City Attor-
ney, is the only elected city attorney in Washington
state. Before his election, Holmes worked as a busi-
ness litigation attorney in Seattle for almost 25 years.
He graduated from Yale College in 1978 with a B.A.
degree in American Studies, concentrating in Energy
and Environmental Sciences. He worked for the Nat-
ural Resources Defense Council, Inc., in Washington,
D.C., before entering the University of Virginia School
of Law, where he earned his J.D. in 1984.

Shaunta Hyde, Managing Director,
Community Relations,
Sustainability + Investments:
Shaunta Hyde has been Managing Director,
Community Relations, Sustainability + Investments at
Alaska Airlines, Inc. since July 3, 2014. Prior to joining
Alaska Airlines, Hyde served as the Director of Global
Aviation Policy for the Boeing Company, where she
worked for 12 years developing strategies to shape
national and international public policy to support
aviation growth and business goals. Prior to joining
Boeing in 2002, she worked for The Metropolitan King
County Council then served as a government relations
manager for the King County Executive. She serves
as Vice Chairperson of the Washington State Board of
Community and Technical Colleges, a Member of the
International Association of Women in Aviation and a
Board Member of Pioneer Human Services. Hyde holds
a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Seattle
University and an Executive Master’s Degree in Business
Administration from the University of Washington’s
Foster School of Business.

UW Regent Joanne Harrell:
Joanne Harrell is the Senior Director
for U.S. Citizenship and Public Affairs
at Microsoft, where she has worked
since 2001. At Microsoft she has led
teams in the Global Sales, Marketing
and Services disciplines with Enterprise,
Public and OEM customers. A Regent
for the University of Washington since
2009, Joanne served as Board Chair
in 2012-2013. She is a member of the
Washington State Women’s Forum and
a 2009 Inductee to the University of
Washington School of Communication
“Hall of Fame”where she was the
school’s 2013 Distinguished Alumna.
Mayor Bruce Harrell: Bruce Harrell and his family have been committed to
community service in this region for more than three decades. Bruce began
his public service in 1979 working for the Seattle City Council under Council
President Paul Kraabel. Bruce attended K-12 in Seattle Public Schools, graduating
from Garfield High. He played football for the University of Washington (1978
Rose Bowl Champion, 1979 Sun Bowl Champion, 1st Team Academic All
American and All Pac-10) and was subsequently elected to the UW Alumni Board
of Trustees. He received the 2007 University of Washington Distinguished Alumni
Award in Political Science and 2008 Husky Legend award.
In 2007, Bruce was elected to the City Council and relected in 2011. Bruce is
Seattle’s Mayor and will decide in the next few days whether to remain in that
role until a new Mayor is elected in November. As a Councilmember, Bruce chairs
the Public Safety, Civil Rights, and Technology Committee, is vice chair of the
Transportation Committee and serves on the Housing, Human Services, Health
and Culture Committee. He also sits on the Puget Sound Regional Council’s
Executive Board, chairs Performance First, a partnership to support minority-
owned businesses, and is the Northwest Regional Director for the National
Technology Adoption Advisory Council.

provided. Pass your bid sheet to your table lead.
TALLY YOUR TABLE TOTAL
The table lead will tally the total bids, record the total on the bottom
of the Dessert Dash bid sheet. A volunteer will come to your table
shortly after the salad course to collect your Desert Dash bid sheet.

After the Raise the Paddle portion of the program, the tables will be
announced in order of highest total bids.
When you hear your table number, your table lead will“DASH”to
the dessert table to claim the dessert of your choice and bring it

had the opportunity of working at the Ritz- Carlton
Atlanta. At nights, I am a guest service representative
at Grady Memorial Hospital also in downtown
Atlanta, so I get to see both sides of the hospitality
industry, which I’m growing to love, my goal is to be
in world without a cubicle. I would love to be able
to play with my degree in hotels, restaurants, maybe
even casinos. Any place where there are good
people and amazing management skills in demand.

ademic career has given me the opportunity to
develop leadership skills through various student

Accountants. I also completed a four-month ex-
change program in France to study the language
and culture. I have also completed three summer
internships at PwC to develop my accounting
and business acumen. After graduation in June
of 2018, I plan to grow both my accounting
knowledge and international experiences.

United States District Court
Judge in Seattle since his appointment
to the federal bench in 2007. Previously,
he served as a King County Superior
Court Judge for more than13 years. Judge
Jones received a Bachelor of Public Affairs
degree from Seattle University in 1972
and is a 1975 University ofWashington
Law School graduate. He is currently on
the National Board of theYMCA of the
USA and has served locally as a Board
member with theYMCA of Greater Seattle
for more than 20 years. He has been on
more than 25 boards and committees
including the Seattle University Board
of Regents, National Center for Courts &
Media, Center for Children &Youth Justice,

Tell us about your proudest accomplishment
that affected positive change in communities
of color.
As a young lawyer, I repeatedly heard law
firms and agencies represent that they
couldn’t find“qualified minorities”to hire
as lawyers. Rather than respond with
frustration and no action, I helped create
the Northwest Minority Job Fair and the
first year Minority Clerkship Programs.
Both were designed to create jobs
and opportunities. 31 years later, both
programs are thriving and have created
scores of jobs for communities of color.
How do you want the community to see your

Throughout his career he demonstrated
leadership on and off the field. His
passion for community, advocacy and
leadership withTabor 100 and other
minority business organizations has
been a driving force in the African
American community, even in his
retirement. Fredell ran Leajak Concrete
Construction for more than 25 years,
which grossed more than $100 million.
Fred’s community service includes
countless boards and commissions
promoting small business. He truly
reflects the values ofTabor 100.
Tell us about your proudest accomplishment that
affected positive change in communities of color.
Participating in the renovation of First
Place School, a school dedicated to
underprivileged and homeless families.
Being in a position to impact kids
from the community while providing
a environment from which they can
achieve just like any other child in Seattle.
Powell Barnett Park, another situation
to provide an opportunity for kids to
play in a Redeveloped city park in the
community with all the amenities.
How do you want the community to see your
contributions 20 years from now?
A former professional athlete that could
‘walk the talk’, someone that made an
effort to hire folks from the community,
someone who took pride in opportunities
within the community no matter how big
or small. Grateful to all the people in the
community that supported me. Knowing
that we can’t do this alone and that
we have to embrace and support one
another. Lead by example, try to leave the
door open for the next person.

EDSON ZAVALA | MANAGER,
SDOT OFFICE OF EQUITY & INCLUSION
Edson moved from
San Antonio in 2014
to assume his role at
SDOT. He has been instrumental in
expanding SDOT’s outreach efforts
with regular quarterly gatherings for
minority businesses. Edson has worked
diligently to promote the values of
Tabor 100 and is active in a number
of minority business organizations,
including serving on the Board of
Tabor 100.

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
CARLA SANTORNO | SUPERINTENDENT,TACOMA
SCHOOL DISTRICT
Carla Santorno
is currently the
superintendent
of the Tacoma
Public Schools. Carla got her start in
education in Denver, Colorado. Born in
Kansas, Mrs. Santorno attended Denver
Public Schools, where she later spent
28 years of her career as a teacher,
principal, and area Superintendent.
Carla’s primary goal as Superintendent
is to increase student achievement. She
stays close to teachers and strives to
provide them the support they need to
effectively educate Tacoma’s students.
Connecting with all the players in the
district – from parents to teachers,
food service workers, bus drivers and
custodial staff, is a part of her vision to
create an aligned focus from classroom
to classroom, and school to school. The
first person in her family to graduate
from high school, she has learned
personally how powerful education can
be, and wants to ensure that all children
have the same opportunities.
Tell us about your proudest accomplishment
that affected positive change in
communities of color.
I am most proud of our district’s
increase in graduation rate. When I
was named superintendent in 2011,
our graduation rate was a shameful
55%. Our Board set a bold goal to
increase our graduation percentage
to 85% by 2020. We proudly met that
goal last year in 2016, and have almost
completely closed the graduation
gap between our white students and
students of color.
How do you want the community to see your
contributions 20 years from now?
I want the Tacoma community to
recognize my commitment to NOT
being recognized individually, but
contributing to our community effort
to educate every child – eliminating
the ability to gauge demographics
by achievement score, graduation
rate, AP enrollment or any academic
measure. I work to have a legacy of city
wide partnerships working seamlessly
to increase student achievement of
ALL children and to simultaneously
develop their social-emotional growth.

ANTHONY BURNETT | MANAGING PARTNER,

Anthony Burnett
runs a nationwide
career information
agency that matches businesses with
employees as well as managed resources
with an emphasis on diversity and
inclusion.While Anthony’s business is
flourishing, he has also engaged heavily
in community-related work, serving on
several Boards, includingTabor 100. His
work on a recentTabor study of small
businesses in Seattle was outstanding.

To be a business that widens the lens

I want our airport to reflect its
community. That’s a big challenge
when you serve such a diverse region,
but it’s the challenge we have to take

wages throughout the region.

We improved our outreach to
communities of color and are
making a real difference in creating
opportunities. This year 70 percent
of our high school summer interns
came from communities of color.
Intentional outreach has put us on a
better path towards equity.
How do you want the community to see your
contributions 20 years from now?
I hope we are viewed as an agency
that never felt satisfied with the
status quo and as an agency that
embraced community engagement.
From Port policies on quality jobs
and apprenticeships to small
business outreach, we are trying
to push the envelope on how we
recognize and close opportunity
gaps in our community.

DBEs, last year our attainment was
nearly double. More importantly, we

question, ‘What does better look like?’

I want our contractors, DBEs and small
business owners, to see themselves
reflected in our system expansion; I
want them to be able to show their
grandchildren their work—light rail
extensions, improved street lighting,
communications systems, civil
engineering and more—and be able
to say with pride, ‘I did this.’

LIVE AUCTION RULES
Each bidder will be given a bidder number upon check-in. By
bidding in the live auction, each bidder agrees to the following
auction rules:
1. To bid in the live auction, hold up your bid card with the
number facing towards the auctioneer. A bid acknowledged
by the auctioneer is a legal contract to purchase the item. The
auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid that is merely a
fractional advance over the prior bid.
2. Top bidders must pay for their items at the end of the night.
Unless otherwise stated, all items are to be removed on the date
of purchase. The purchaser assumes responsibilities to locate
and remove purchases from the auction premises. Purchasers
may claim the certificate for services and tangible items from the
cashier or item pick-up volunteer. You will be asked to show your
“PAID”receipt for tangible items.
3. Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations must be
mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted. Tickets
for travel packages are coach class unless otherwise noted. Travel
will be provided by donors as described. Because travel charges
change, travel costs may decrease the values stated, however, no
refunds will be allowed.
4. Each person who is issued a bid number (bidder) assumes all
risks and hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the
auction. Each bidder agrees to hold harmless from any liability
Tabor 100, its elected and appointed officials, members and
employees, the auctioneers, the event organizers, sponsors and/
or volunteers connected with the auction.
5. All purchases are final and there will be no exchanges or refunds
unless otherwise noted. We will gladly accept your payment by
cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover on
the night of the auction. We are a 501(c)3 charitable organization
and your payment may be tax deductible only to the extent
provided by law.
6. Tabor 100 reserves the right to add or withdraw, without notice,
any items to or from the auction and raffle. Tabor 100 has
attempted to describe and catalog all items correctly, but all
items are offered“as is, where is.”The value listed is our estimate of
