This document summarizes the key findings from the 2019 European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD). Some of the main results include: cigarette smoking is declining while e-cigarette use is rising, especially among females; alcohol use is still high but declining trends continue; cannabis remains the most widely used illicit drug with large cross-country variations in use; and non-medical use of pharmaceuticals, early substance use onset, and social media/gaming use are ongoing public health concerns. The ESPAD study aims to monitor long-term trends in adolescent substance use across Europe to support evidence-based policies.
