Carbohydrate Counts On Lunch Menus <ul><li>Added total grams of carbohydrate (CHO) to each food item on monthly lunch menu. </li></ul><ul><li>Researched by Francine Kerber, RD with Bon Secours Good Life Center for nutritional accuracy . </li></ul><ul><li>One serving of CHO is 15g, according to the American Diabetes Association CHO Exchange List. </li></ul><ul><li>Most children should eat 45-75g per meal. </li></ul><ul><li>Benefits diabetic children w/their insulin. </li></ul>

  4. 4. Dynacal <ul><li>SNS added all lunch menus to the district calendar powered by Dynacal so parents can get menus on their hand held PDA’s. </li></ul><ul><li>www.Dynacal.com/henrico to select the lunch menus for ELEM. MS, & HS. </li></ul>

Nutrition Nuggets and Teen Food & Fitness Newsletters <ul><li>SNS is again offering these informational school-to-home reproducible newsletters from September to May. </li></ul><ul><li>Newsletters are e-mailed monthly to: </li></ul><ul><li>*Principals for communications & school websites </li></ul><ul><ul><li>*HCPS website </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>*All School Cafeterias </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Newsletters help your school qualify for the Healthy Virginians Scorecard with the Governor’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Gold Award by ‘ targeting nutrition and physical activity at home ’. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Newsletters are photocopy ready for all to re-use. </li></ul></ul>

Food Explorers Curriculum Grade 1 <ul><li>Objective: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>To introduce an unfamiliar fruit or vegetable w/lesson plan. 1 st graders will sample while learning about its origin and nutritional benefits. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Program is developed & paid for by SNS </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Program Length: Monthly for 15 minutes </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Program Frequency: Available to teachers and cafeteria manager by e-mail on the first of each month (October 2009 through May 2010) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>When: Determined by classroom teachers per their schedule. </li></ul></ul>

Food Explorers Curriculum For Grade 1 <ul><li>Day of Lesson: </li></ul><ul><li>-Cafeteria staff prepares bite-sized samples, place </li></ul><ul><li>on trays and delivers to classroom. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>-Classroom teacher teaches lesson & cafeteria staff </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>distributes sample. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>-Lesson incorporates the 5 senses: looking, touching, </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>smelling, tasting, and listening </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>-Lesson includes the importance of tasting new </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>foods, respecting other peoples’ preferences, & </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>SOL reporting categories in Science, Math, English, </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>& Nutrition. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Elem. Principals are invited to sign up their 1st grade teachers to participate. </li></ul></ul>

General Mills Champions for Healthy Kids $10,000 Grant <ul><li>Together Henrico School Nutrition Services & Dept. of Health & P.E. was awarded a $10,000 grant for “Action Based Components for Learning and Good Health”. </li></ul><ul><li>Over 1,200 organizations applied. General Mills selected 50 for 2009-2010 year. </li></ul><ul><li>Uses a GEOFITTNESS food pyramid mat to incorporate nutrition and exercise. </li></ul><ul><li>Grant will be for Dumbarton, Lakeside, Laburnum and Highland Springs Elem. </li></ul>

Central Virginia Foodbank Backpack Program <ul><li>Combined initiative with the CVFB/ SNS & ‘ Communities in Schools of Henrico ’ for 2009-10. </li></ul><ul><li>Assists low-income students. </li></ul><ul><li>Every Friday, SNS will pack food items provided by CVFB into a backpack to distribute to needy students . </li></ul><ul><li>Backpacks will contain 6 meals, all shelf-stable and child-friendly to take home to eat over the weekend . </li></ul><ul><li>Would like partnership with PTA’s </li></ul>

SNS Teaches Nutrition to Students <ul><li>All 7 Health/Physical Education teachers at Brookland MS will implement a nutrition unit from Sept. – Dec. in their curriculum. </li></ul><ul><li>Tim Mertz, SNS Director has been invited to teach students a variety of nutritional topics. </li></ul>
  12. 12. Muffins With Mom Donuts With Dad <ul><li>Program purpose is to foster community, parental socialization, education and nutrition. </li></ul><ul><li>PTA’s to sponsor at Elem. Schools </li></ul><ul><li>Was discontinued in some schools due to SNS’s Breakfast Program </li></ul><ul><li>To help your PTA, SNS will invite parents to join their children for a free breakfast when their child buys a meal. </li></ul>

Dr Seuss’s Birthday Tuesday March 2, 2010 <ul><li>A popular marketing program that we started last year w/elem schools & PTA’s </li></ul><ul><li>Join our cafeterias in celebrating Dr. Seuss week and Read Across America. </li></ul><ul><li>This year SNS will showcase “Green Eggs and Ham” on our menu. Yum, yum! </li></ul><ul><li>Themes can include Twin Day, Primary Color Day, Mismatched Color Day & more. </li></ul>

A Walk for Children's Health April 18, 2010 <ul><li>SNS is once again partnering with Bon Secours Good Life Center. </li></ul><ul><li>Purpose is to bring awareness to the problems of childhood obesity and provide education and prevention information. </li></ul><ul><li>Next walk: Saturday April 18, 2010 at Maymont Park from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. </li></ul><ul><li>Great Nutrition Project for all PTA’s – free, no fund raising for walking each mile, just have fun! </li></ul>

The FIRST ‘Henrico Healthy Kids’ Cookbook <ul><li>Collaborative effort between HCPS, HSNS, and Bon Secours Good Life Center to publish the first “Henrico Healthy Kid’s Cookbook” </li></ul><ul><li>Purpose is to bring awareness to childhood obesity by changing behavior at an early age. </li></ul><ul><li>Invite all HCPS children grades K-5. </li></ul>
  17. 17. The First Henrico Healthy Kids’ Cookbook <ul><li>Focus is on nutrition, food prep & kitchen safety while teaching math, reading, and writing to children </li></ul><ul><li>Aligns with Va. SOL’s </li></ul><ul><li>Students will submit their favorite healthy recipe and why it’s good for them along with their favorite physical activity. </li></ul><ul><li>Recipes will be have nutrient analyses provided by dietitians from the Good Life Center & VCU. </li></ul><ul><li>Distributed free at “Walk” on April 18, 2010. </li></ul>

Will be posted on HCPS website to assist students with allergies. </li></ul><ul><li>“ Nutri-kids” Menu Analysis to provide Kcals, PRO, CHO, & FAT information on HCPS website. </li></ul><ul><li>Add CHO Counts for breakfast menus and all ala carte snacks. </li></ul>
