Understanding Underlayment

  1. 1. Understanding Underlayment With TAMKO Roofing Products
  2. 2. Why Use Underlayment?  Underlayment has been utilized since the 1980’s to help reduce sound, imperfections, and threat of damage to a roof.  Benefits include additional insulation, greater resilience, and generally increased life of the roof.  Providing an underlayment for your roof is not only inexpensive, you can do it yourself.
  3. 3. Get to Know your Underlayment  Failure to add underlayment can cause premature failure of the shingles.  Not all kinds of underlayment are created equal. Know how to best install yours for the greatest effect.  An underlayment consisting of asphalt saturated organic felt, such as TAMKO Number 15 or Number 30 felt, should be applied over the entire deck before the installation of Heritage shingles.
  4. 4. Beginning the Application  Apply the felt when the deck is dry.  On roof decks 4” per 1’ and greater, apply the felt parallel to the eaves lapping each course of the felt over the lower course at least 2”.  Where ends join, lap the felt 4”.  If left exposed, the felt underlayment may be adversely effected by moisture and weathering.  Laying of the underlayment and the shingle application must be done together.
  5. 5. Employing Moisture Guard  In areas where ice builds up along the eaves, or a backup of water from frozen or clogged gutters is a potential problem, TAMKO’s Moisture Guard Plus Waterproofing Underlayment may be used.  Apply to Eaves, Rakes, Ridges, Valleys, around Chimneys, Skylights, and/or Dormers to help prevent water damage.
  6. 6. Staying Informed The best way to ensure a succesful installation of your underlayment is to remain informed. Be sure to investigate any questions you may have regarding your TAMKO shingles. Lawsuit costs and effort regarding unexpected damages can be avoided if all instructions are properly followed. For more information on ice and water barriers, contact TAMKO’s technical assistance department.
