  2. 2. Preparing a Defense  For new construction where there is a possibility of ice forming along the eaves or in the valleys, TAMKO TW Metal and Tile Underlayment should be used as the first layer of protection.  It should extend from the eave’s edge to a point at least twenty-four inches beyond the exterior wall line of the building, and along the entire length of the valley nineteen inches on each side of the center line.
  3. 3. Applying the Underlayment  To help assure protection from the elements, the entire roof must be covered prior to shingle application.  TAMKO number thirty asphalt saturated organic felt is the recommended underlayment for this process.  This applies to new roof or reroof applications.
  4. 4. New Roof Construction  However, for new roof construction with slopes of three inches per foot to four inches per foot, TAMKO Self- adhering TW Metal and Tile Underlayment must be applied over the entire deck.
  5. 5. Applying the Felt  Apply the felt parallel to the eaves starting with the lowest course, lapping each course two inches.  Where the ends join, lap four inches.  When covering hips and valleys, always overlap felt by extending twenty-four inches beyond the center line of the hip or valley.
  6. 6. For Further Information…  For roof application requiring an underrider’s laboratory’s class A system, refer to the Metalworks installation guide or contact TAMKO’s technical services department. Using these simple guidelines, your project can be completed with minimal effrot. With TAMKO, roofing complains such as complexity and confusion can become a thing of the past.
