1. 1. Adobe’s Open Screen Project
2. 2. What is Open Screen Project?
Open Screen project is an industry-wide initiative, led by Adobe with the participation of other industry leaders.
Vision is to “Enable consumers to engage with rich internet experiences seamlessly across any device, anywhere”
Write once and run the Flash anywhere on web, mobile phone, TV and other devices.
The Open Screen Project Fund is a $10 million USD market development fund designed to accelerate the creation of applications, content, and services that leverage the Flash Platform and run across mobile, desktop, and consumer electronics devices. Adobe and Nokia are first contributors.
2
3. 3. What is Adobe doing to help the project?
Opening up the runtime to its Flash Players – Specifically, it is going to open up the SWF and FLV/F4V specifications. Adobe is providing optimized Flash player technology to Google and Yahoo! to enhance search engine indexing of the Flash file format (SWF)
Removing licensing fees: Adobe is making the next major releases of Flash Player and AIR for devices royalty free — across all platforms, desktops, and devices — for Open Screen Project participants. Versions of Flash are on 500 million mobile devices already(2009), and that is expected to grow to one billion over the next 12 months)
Publishing the APIs for porting Flash to other devices
Publishing the RTMP specification.
Publishing Adobe protocols for pushing content to devices , EX: Flash Cast, AMF
3
4. 4. Who are the Partners?
Source:
4
5. 5. What do the partners accomplish?
Partners are working together to provide a consistent runtime environment that will provide optimal performance across a variety of operating systems and devices.
The ultimate objective is to provide best experience to customers.
5
6. 6. Who Benefits?
6
Chipset vendors
OEMs
Operators
Content Providers
Developers
End Users
7. 7. Glossary
7
AMF is commonly used to transfer data between an application built with Flash or Flex and a remote service over the internet
Flash Cast is the Mobile Content Delivery Protocol for robust data services
RTMP Real Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP) is a proprietary protocol developed by Adobe Systems for streaming audio, video and data over the Internet, between a Flash player and a server.
The SWF file format specification is used to deliver vector graphics, text, video, sound, and interactivity via Flash Player and Adobe AIR. SWF files can reach over 98% of Internet-enabled desktops and more than 800 million handsets and mobile devices.
An FLV file encodes synchronized audio and video streams. The audio and video data within FLV files is encoded in the same way as audio and video within SWF files. The F4V format is based on the format specified by ISO/IEC 14496-12, the ISO base media file format. The FLV/F4V specification documents the file formats for storing media content used to deliver audio and video for playback in Flash Player and AIR. FLV and F4V are the de facto standards for web video today. More than 75% of broadcasters who stream video on the web use the FLV/F4V formats.
