  4. 4. Play...In the play Cassius meant to tell Brutusthat in the past, people believed their fatewas decided, but he has the power tochange it. 4
  5. 5. MatambúThe Chorotegas were the first to arrivein Costa Rica, and yet, when a greaterpower came, they were subdued. TheSpanish people abolished theirlanguage, prohibited their beliefs, andimprisoned their culture. 5
  6. 6. ProcessThe Spanish conquistadors punished anyonewho would speak in their native language or actaccording to their traditions.Starting with the smallest generations, theirculture stated to disappear until it was gone. 6
  7. 7. But...Destiny is a choice, and those peoplechose not to give up on their beliefs andare doing their best to preserve whateverculture they have left. 7
  8. 8. Present DayToday, little is known, but the Chorotegas carryan optimistic mission to revive their culture.They have only found about 500 words of theiroriginal language, yet they keep trying to keeptheir culture alive with their traditions. 8
  9. 9. "Mothers Day"One of the traditions the Matambú people arestill keeping alive is their version of the MothersDay. In their celebration, all mothers of the"town" go a special lunch to which only mothersare invited to go. 9
  10. 10. TortillasAnother tradition they still preserve is one wecan compare to when we Christians commune.For then, the people came from corn, so theyconsider tortillas to be special food which is notpermitted to eat with silverware, and is onlybroken with the hands. 10
