  • Again, with Facebook’s built-in search, many use it to find local businesses within Facebook, so it’s important to focus on SEO both externally and internally to Facebook:2 key areas of focus for SEO within a Facebook business page:Facebook search engine SEO.External search engine SEO (Google, Bing, etc.).
  • It’s important to understand that what works to boost SEO for external search engines will also apply to boosting SEO internally to Facebook, but the opposite isn’t always true.
  • Create a vanity URL. This will help with both external and internal SEO. After you have 25 ‘Likes’ or ‘Fans’ on your Facebook business page, you can create a vanity URL that’s recognized by search engines. You want to include a high ranking keyword or phrase as part of the URL that’s specific to your business, or you may simply choose to use your business name. Begin setting up your vanity URL by going to http://www.facebook.com/username/ and selecting your page from the drop down box.
  • Use GEO-modifiers when possible, especially in the vanity URL and business page name or description. This will help boost SEO with external search engines in addition to the Facebook search engine. For example, Real Estate Agent St. Paul, or Hometown Roofing Contractor Morristown, WV 26555.
  • Select the right category for your business. This is pretty straight forward, but to target the right fans, be sure to select the right category that your business falls in when setting up your business page. This will primarily help with internal Facebook SEO.
  • Use the right keywords for updates and posts. The internal Facebook search engine will pick up on keywords in your status updates and posts, so do some research and find out how your target market on Facebook ‘finds’ your type of business, and incorporate those keywords and phrases throughout your updates as appropriate (don’t overdo it!). However, Facebook posts or updates in and of themselves won’t provide external search engine SEO juice outside of Facebook.
