Alcoholism refers to any condition that result in
continued consumption of alcohol despite of health
problems and negative consequences.
In 19th and 20th century alcoholism was also referred as
Dipsomania means compulsion towards consumption
of alcohol.
The quantity, frequency and regularity of
alcohol consumption develop alcoholism.
It differ from person to person

According to WHO –”Alcoholics are those excessive
drinkers whose dependence upon alcohol has
attained such a degree that it shows a noticeable
mental disturbance or interference with their mental
health, interpersonal relations and their smooth
social and economic functioning.”

Drink alone or in secret.
Not remembering routine conversations.
Getting irritated as usual drinking time approaches.
Trying to hide alcohol in unexpected places at home.
Requiring a large quantity of alcohol to feel its effect.

Among these about 50% are suffering from
alcoholism.
Revenue from alcohol in India in the year 2007 was
31,578 crores.
Revenue from alcohol in Kerala in the year 2007 was
Rs 3670 crores.
