  2. 2. Introduction  Sue Ann Ma has a range of experience in financial services, accountancy, estate planning, and real estate. She is currently the president of Seminal Financial Group and runs her own accountancy practice in Houston. In addition to her work, Sue Ann Ma supports the American Red Cross. After the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Red Cross helped to set up savings and credit programs in Canaan, a suburb of Port-au-Prince. Many people had to move to this previously unoccupied area after their homes were destroyed in the natural disaster.
  3. 3. Red Cross  In partnership with the organization Global Communities, Red Cross helped set up financial management trainings for the Canaan residents who would be running the new programs. While Global Communities and Red Cross helped to initiate the programs, the money that sustains them is sourced from participating program members. The members, many of whom are women, pool their money into a fund that each individual can borrow from when needed to support their business. These small loans help to build the members’ businesses such that members have been able to pay back what they borrowed within the three-month time frame they are given.
