Simple secrets of happy people

  1. 1. Simple secrets of happy people 1. They make every day a holiday Get excited about every moment of your holiday – whether you’re exploring a new place, doing something daring or just chilling out. “Well, don’t wait until your trip for that I’ve worked hard, I deserve this’ feeling,” says Geraldine Thalmessinger, life coach from Bounce Back Europe. “Life can whiz by and leave you behind, so get out and enjoy it now.” Even if it’s just going out for coffee, treat it with the same level of relaxation as you would if you were on holiday. 2. They look popular (And curiously young) Ever seen a grey, gaunt face opposite you on the bus and wished that were you? Thought not. “It’s natural to love being around people who don’t look constantly miserable, so if you make yourself appear cheerful, you’ll start to feel it,” says Tessa Souter, author of Anything I Can Do… You Can Do Better. “That’s why happy people have a teenage glow, even if they have more laughter lines than OAP bus-pass holders.” 3. They love surprises It’s frustrating when people assume you’re going to moan before you open your mouth. “Liven things up by playing against this negative typecasting,” recommends psychotherapist Carol Martin-Sperry. “If you’ve had a bad journey to work, buy a coffee for your workmates. Pleasing them will de-stress you.” 4. They live for fish and chips “If you wake up and start afresh each day, you won’t waste time dwelling on problems that could cast a shadow over your life forever.” 5. They always find reasons to laugh “It’s a fact that you’ll face occasional setbacks in life,” admits Souter. “But if you can take a step back and treat your situation like a gripping film, you’ll almost enjoy the drama. Imagine a packed cinema transfixed by the fate, add that movie-trailer voice- over and you can’t help but smile. And, of course, all the best films have happy endings.” 6. They care about other people All this navel-gazing can make you forget about everyone else. “When you’re not just concerned with making yourself feel good, you allow a real connection with other people,” says Martin-Sperry. “By putting yourself in their place, you can help them and share in their happiness, too.” See it as a chance to double your luck. 7. They like ticking things off Imagine you have a big problem, like you’ve just bought a flat that needs completely redecorating. Overwhelming, isn’t it? “Break it down into small challenges,” advises Thalmessinger. “Start with the room you’re most excited about transforming and
