Independence Day of the Bahamas
2. Stephen Eric Lawrence resides in Nassau,
Bahamas, and maintains a charitable
nonprofit organization, the Lawrence
Family Foundation, on the island.
Although he is not a native Bahamian,
Stephen Eric Lawrence participated in
many of the activities honoring the 40th
anniversary of Bahamas' independence
in 2013.
3. Every July 10, the Bahamas celebrates
Independence Day to mark its freedom
from Britain. The history of colonial rule goes
back to the 15th century, when Christopher
Columbus established a base there. It
came under the control of several
dominant powers before the British set up
the first permanent settlement in 1647. In
1964, the Bahamas finally received the right
of self-rule, and in 1973, it earned complete
independence.
4. To mark this event, citizens of the Bahamas
celebrate for an entire week. From July 3rd
to the 10th, people enjoy musical and
dance performances, fireworks, and
parades, among other festivities. On the
Friday before Independence Day, the
nation holds National Pride Day, which
features marching bands, a flag-raising
ceremony, and awards. Although the major
events take place in Rawson Square, Bay
Street, local communities often host their
own parties.
