Rubric www.ecb.europa.eu © Background SDMX for statistical data and metadata modelling - Introduction The SDMX sponsors → BIS, ECB, Eurostat, IMF, OECD, United Nations and World Bank mandated ECB, Eurostat and the OECD to propose Data Structure Definitions (DSDs) in order to implement SDMX in National Accounts according to ESA2010/SNA2008. Objectives: • deliver SDMX DSDs for global use allowing for data exchanges using the new DSD starting from September 2014 • provide principles and agreements for future governance and maintenance of the DSD • provide a common framework for production and dissemination of reference metadata to end users

Rubric www.ecb.europa.eu © How the Aliases work? 20 SDMX for statistical data and metadata modelling - Aliases • An alias can be assigned to each data object, e.g. a time series, in the ECB databank • The defined alias will be like a “synonym” of the series key that represent the time series in either FAME or SDW • A time series can be referred to by its series key or by the alias assigned to it • When the series key of a time series has an alias, one can therefore use either the actual series key or the alias to access the time series in programmes or interactively via FAME sessions • Aliases can be used in • FAME Populator worksheets • UNIX when accessing FAME databases through programmes or interactively • SDW via the search functionality

Rubric www.ecb.europa.eu © Use of aliases in the FAME databases 23 SDMX for statistical data and metadata modelling - Aliases • Aliases have been assigned to series keys in the datasets that were affected by the change over. • The defined alias to an actual series key will refer to identical object in the database. • That means that regardless of which naming convention (actual series key or alias) is used in FAME an identical time series will be retrieved, i.e. same observations and metadata. • Users can therefore already use the aliases referring to the new BPM6 and NA DSDs, instead of the actual series keys to which they are associated, in their programmes or in interactive FAME sessions. • For example the report of the actual series key and the alias are identical. In addition querying information on the last update of the aliases or the actual series keys will display the last update of the time series object.

Rubric www.ecb.europa.eu © Use of aliases in the SDW 28 SDMX for statistical data and metadata modelling - Aliases • The aliases in SDW are implemented as technical attributes under the name “Alias”. • In SDW the series keys stored in the export tables are of course the SDMX compliant series keys like, and not the aliases. • The aliases will be visible in the quick view and will be searchable. • When accessing the pivot tables, the series keys refer to the actual series keys, and not the aliases, since it refers to the underlying Data Structure Definition.
