Ecology Versus Technology.pdf
1. Ecology Versus Technology
Let’s start by understanding what the ecological crisis is. In the 1970s, the Fordist growth model based
on the depletion of natural resources was facing a decline, fuelled by considerations on the ecological
questions. Today, we have agreed on the negative effects created by industrialization, but it is not as
simple to establish a general truth for new technologies. In this crisis we have a techno-pessimistic
position given by the Meadows report and a techno-optimistic position like sustainable development.
The techno-pessimistic position highlights the finiteness of natural resources, which then imposes a
process of degrowth. Contrariwise, Sustainable Development would be “a mode of development that
meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their
own needs. “In this vision, we embrace technical progress and new technologies to serve the
environment.
How to produce for the environment? With processes that reduce the environmental impact at the time
of production: at the end of production, called “end of pipe” or during production, called “clean
production”. “Curative” techniques take place at the end of the production process. It is based on
installations such as filters or storage capacities. They are often set up by polluting companies to
comply with regulations. On the other hand, integrated techniques serving the environment are cleaner
methods and work through recirculation, using materials that respect the environment.
2. Technology is, in fact, a double-edged sword, we are aware of the improvement in quality of human
life, but those same evolutions have been supplemented by environmental degradation. We are
looking for ways to make our production cleaner and more sensitive to the environment. How can we
put these discoveries to work for the planet? Like any professional, an ecologist must create his data
base to work. The interconnected world we live in and IoT, gives us the opportunity to create a
scientific database to serve the environment through Smart Lightning, Smart Energy efficient system,
Smart cities, Smart transport, Smart Heath, Smart Farming, …
Now, let’s go dive to our emotions about pollution during the pandemic, by asking you a simple
question: how did you feel about the clear waters of Venice, the whales in the creeks of Marseille or
even the pure air of Hong Kong? Have you questioned the necessity of travelling by plane, train, or
car to leave your children a planet with breathable air? We would say yes! What if the coronavirus
was the facilitator, we needed to change our consumption patterns? In any case, I”m pinning my
hopes on it.
And this is where Must project takes on its full meaning. We often think that the emergence of ideas
and their creation only exists when we are together physically. Our professional Digital Business
Ecosystem platform with its interactivity tools: matchmaking, Networking Virtual exhibition provides
all the necessities to work as a team no matter who we are, where we are and avoiding unnecessary
travel and wasting time.
