  2. 2. Countable Nouns are nouns which can be counted (e.g. one tomato, two tomatoes,etc) and can be in the singular or the plural. We put a before the noun in thesingular when it begins with a consonant sound and an when it begins with a vowelsound.Uncountable nouns are nouns which cannot be counted and they usually have noplural. These nouns include; food: cheese, butter, meat, salt, pepper, bread,chocolate, jam, etc.  We can use countable and uncountable nouns after phrases of quantity, such as: a jar/ bottle/ cup/ glass/ slice/ piece/ loaf/ tin/ kilo/ carton/ can/ bowl/ packet + of, etc.Some/ Any  We use some with uncountable nouns in the affirmative. There is some cheese in the fridge.  We also use some with countable nouns but only in the plural. There are some bananas in the fruit bowl!  We use any with countable and uncountable nouns in the negative. There isn`t any sugar in the tea. There aren’t any apples on the tree.  We also use any with countable and uncountable nouns In questions. Is there any milk in the carton? Are there any knives on the table?
