Thinking about cloud computing? It's pretty hard to be in IT today and not be inundated with messaging about "The Cloud". It’s in all of the trade magazines, all over Twitter, and the most popular theme at this year’s trade shows. Chances are, your CIO is wondering if your organization should be leveraging cloud services and thoughts like that have a way of rolling their way downhill toward you! During this webcast, we focus on what you, as a network engineer or system administrator, need to know about cloud. Some of what we discuss includes: key differences between virtualization, SaaS, PaaS, and cloud; public vs. private cloud; network based cloud services like QoS, VoIP, and security services; and cloud access technologies and concerns.

During this webcast we’re going to focus on what you, as a network engineer or system administrator, need to know about cloud. Some of what we’ll discuss will include:
• Key differences between virtualization, SaaS, PaaS, and cloud
• Public vs. private cloud
• Network based cloud services like QoS, VoIP, and security services
• Cloud access technologies and concerns

 17. 17. Cloud Defined
A style of computing where scalable and elastic IT-related capabilities are provided “as a service” to [internal/external] customers using Internet technologies.
Cloud Characteristics
Broad network access
Rapid elasticity
Measured service
On-demand self-service
Shared Services
Resource pooling
Location independence
18. 18. Cloud Enabling Technologies
Virtualization
High-capacity computing resources
High-speed, readily available internet connections
Availability of automation platforms and tools ($$$$)
19. 19. Why are we talking about cloud?
Geek & Poke, 3/23/2009,
20. 20. Hype is High
SOLARWINDS CONFIDENTIAL
Tseronis reminded the audience that, under the new administration, the onus will be on providing justification for building a new data center rather than using a cloud service, rather than vise versa. "If you don't build out that business case ... and it hits the [Office of Management and Budget] examiners, and they are looking to see the justification for the money to do this, [they will ask] why aren't they buying cloud services?"
Peter Tseronis, Deputy Associate Chief Information Officer at the U.S. Department of Energy and member of the Government Information Technology Executive Council
FY2010 President’s Budget Submission
21. 21. Cloud Types
Public cloud characteristics:
Owned and operated by the SP
Shared computing resources among multiple customers
Common concerns around security
Relatively small initial investment and learning curve
Private cloud characteristics:
Owned & operated by IT
Shared computing resources among multiple departments
Highly secure
Heavy initial investment and learning curve

Hybrid Cloud

Gartner: “By YE13, 60% of Cloud computing management will still be in support of private (and hybrid) cloud environments”
25. 25. How cloud affects your mgmt strategy
Where’s the cloud in comparison to your users?
How much oversubscribed are your internet connections today?
How much capacity do you have on your datacenter resources?
How do you guarantee service/performance over public networks?
What SLAs will you need in place?
26. 26. Smart Steps Toward Cloud
Establish baselines first
Get some experience with the technology
Understand the issues that it will accelerate
Realize that the network just got a whole lot more important (yet again)…
Shore up your network management strategy
