Waterford has 100 km of coastline, with at least 30 bathing areas, 18 main monitored and managed areas, 6 nationally designated, 5 blue flags, 6 green coast beaches, 11 classified as excellent, 2 good, 3 sufficient and 2 poor
Main pressures on bathing water quality all made worse by heavy rainfall
Chlorination of the village wastewater overflow discharge during the bathing season. Pumps and text alerts triggered by water level indicator.
The dosing set up is fixed dosing of 14% hypochlorite from 25 litres drums.
Dosage was initially set as 8 mg/l but this was increased to 16 mg/l based on before and after testing. At 16 mg/l there appears to be good reduction in E coli counts from 12 million to 1500 per 100 mls – a 99% reduction.
Some breakdon issues occurred during 2014 and the dosage may not be sufficient to achieve bacterial reduction during higher wastewater flows during wet weather.
Surface waters a significant pressure on some bathing areas, hard to predict
