Macrocell Network • Say, 18,000 cells for a national network • Each cell sector has >1000 parameters • Relatively static network • Low scale speed – fewer handovers • Relative length of cell boundary = 1 • Manual network planning possible (just) Femtocell Network • Say, 6 million cells (enterprise and residential) • Each cell sector has >1000 parameters • Fast changing network • High scale speed – many handovers • Relative length of cell boundary = 18 • Network must be automatically configured

What Benefit Does SON Bring?  The features automate:  Configuration  Optimization  Resilience  These help to:  Minimize operational costs, femtocells are effectively plug-n-play  Offer a superior user experience – fewer dropped calls  Tune the network for inside-out traffic (serving outdoor traffic from indoor cell)  Maximize the traffic off-loaded from the macrocell network  Turn individual femtocells into a huge capacity layer within a larger network

Challenges  3GPP defines the SON mechanisms, but not the algorithms.  Interoperability between different vendor SON implementations may be limited; at best sub-optimal, at worst unstable.  Small Cell Forum initiative will seek to ensure multiple compatible solutions are available. The Node-H solution will be compliant.  Need to avoid ‘lock-in’ that restricts supplier competition.  Femtocell SON will be evolving for the foreseeable future as industry seeks to refine operation.
