Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a very important factor in ranking your website for your
keyword on search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing.
It is necessary for small businesses to capitalise on this and make sure they are getting the traffic
they want as making a website to promote and gain more interest in your business is becoming very
effective.
To ensure you get the best results you will have to use SEO but this is not that difficult and there are
some simple changes that will have a large impact.
These changes will not only be to your website as the key to ranking is to diversify, this means you
will have to make changes on-site and off-site to ensure complete optimisation.
On-site SEO is relatively simple and consists of changing Meta descriptions, <h1> tags, title tags
and making sure you have a good keyword (identifying which keywords to target is a whole book in
itself) density in the information on your site.
The Meta description is no longer as effective in ranking your site but it does help increase click-
through rate which is always good. Changing the <h1> and title tags to feature your keyword can
have a significant effect on your rankings for that keyword.
Another way to increase your ranking is to make sure your content is quality and your content
strategy is sound.
The more quality and unique content you have on your site that has something to do with your
keyword will help your site rank. Just make sure your keyword density in the articles is about 1-5%
so you do not get penalised and you should again see an increase your rankings. These are simple
changes to your website that are great for your website and can move you up the search engine
results pages (SERPs).
Link building is another great way to gain higher rankings as it creates back-links which, if done
correctly, search engines love. Creating back-links is simple but you should always create back-
links on pages that relate to your business’ niche or Google will penalise you.
If you do some research on things like web 2.0 properties and social signals you should be able to
rank your own site without spending too much money.
And as always the major search engines love natural links earned through quality content
which has been well researched and written.
That is why having a simple and robust content strategy in place for your web presence is
vital to your online success.
These changes are all simple yet they all have a huge effect on your rankings in the SERPs. By
following some easy steps on-site and off-site you can make some huge changes in your rankings.

3. Simple SEO strategies for small business
That said, if you are looking to bring in someone to help you, then it pays dividends to ask them a
few questions about their experience.
Obviously, given the fact you are looking for help puts you at a disadvantage when it comes to
knowledge so few leading questions such as:
1. What tools do you use to help you?
There are a few out there from Google webmaster tools, Raven tools through to SEOMoz.
A quick response naming a few tools will give you comfort.
2. What metrics will you be using to judge success?
The key to any answer will be the use of the word 'organic' - which simply means natural results not
paid for links or paid advertising.
3. Will you be doing the work yourself?
A lot (and I mean a lot) of people will bid for your work then head to an outsourcing site to get it
done, this effectively raises their margins. There is nothing wrong with this, but at that point you
need to assess their project management skills as well as their SEO skills.
Of course all prospective customers will have success stories, some will happily tell you about less
successful stories.
SEO for small business is a big responsibility as your SEO consultant can bring high success or
waste your $$'s, making the right decision is important - so take your time when making it!
I hope you enjoyed the above and gleaned a little useful knowledge.

Jeremy
