We can all agree that a 1 to 1 program would be beneficial for a school. But can we all agree on which device is more appropriate? Today, we'll take a look at a few reasons why netbooks or Chromebooks might be the best choice for your program.

This presentation is part of a larger research project I'm working on to gather some data from actual students about which device - a Chromebook or a 7" Galaxy Tab - they find more useful in their own work.

Watch the presentation, comment with your thoughts, or head over to my blog to get involved and to keep up to date on my research.

Three Reasons to Choose Netbooks for Your School's One to One Tech Program

  1. 1. National Educational Technology Plan“Because infrastructure for learning should support learning in andout of the classroom, students and educators need Internet access devices for around-the-clock use from any location.”
  2. 2. Clearly We Need DevicesBut Which One Is Right For Your School? A Tablet or a Netbook…?
  3. 3. Today, We’ll Argue for Netbooks.Why?Let’s considerthese reasonsthree.
  4. 4. Laptops Are For Typing
  5. 5. Mavis Beacon Doesn’t Teach Touch Screens. But she does teach how to typeon a keyboard…A proficient person can easilytype 50 to 75 wpm.An expert can type 100 to 150wpm.
  6. 6. I type 100 to 125wpm on a keyboard.Can you do that with an iPhone…?I know I can’t.
  7. 7. On screen keyboards takeup screen real estate.I can fit a lot on that screen. Can’t fit so much here.
  8. 8. What Are You Typing…? A post it note or an extended paper?
  9. 9. Laptops Are Simply Better at Typing. They’re more convenient. You’ve got more screen realestate. They’re more suitable for typingextended papers.
  10. 10. Reason #2: Flash
  11. 11. No Flash On Mobile.First, there was no Flash on iOS.Now there’s no Flash on Android. There’s no Flash anywhere…except for your computer.
  12. 12. Why do you needFlash…?A lot of old educational gamesuse Flash. Some of your textbooksupplemental resources mightuse Flash.
  13. 13. Sure, there are alternatives.
  14. 14. But what are you going to dowhile you wait for developers to update…?
  15. 15. Reason #3: Poor Multitasking
  16. 16. Mobile Apps CanDo a Lot of Things. But you tend to do them one at a time.
  17. 17. With a Laptop,Multitasking isSimple.One browser tab forGoogle Music.One for a PresentationI’m building.One for reading the web.One for searching forimages.
  18. 18. Want multiple windows open…? You can do that with a computer. Even a super old one. Can’t really do that on a tablet. Pick a screen and look at it.
  19. 19. Researching + Writing At the Same TimeIt’s easier on a laptop than on atablet.Switching between tabs and/orapps on a tablet is a pain in theneck.Plain and simple.
  20. 20. Seriously. Netbooks are clearly better at certain things. They allow you to type quicker and more efficiently. This is good for longer written pieces. They support Flash and older interactive software, like all the old websites you use and the stuff from your textbook publisher. Netbooks are much better at multi- tasking and having multiple windows open. Better for when you’re doing research and writing at the same time.Image Credit: “Serious Cheetah.”
  21. 21. So Ask Yourself…Do you want kids to typeextended responses, like essaysand research papers? Or arethey just typing short snippets?Do you need to use Flash tosupport legacy software, or areall your needs met by mobile-compatible websites?Do your kids need to multitaskand do several tasks at once, orare they using their devices tofocus on one thing, like reading?
