I offer a palette of passages meant to deepen your appreciation for Jesus' Olivet Discourse's significance. And not only 'deepen' appreciation, but also clarify and underscore some seriously grave warnings and grim descriptions of the End-Time's that Christ offers His readers for consideration. This collection of related verses is well worth your inspection and reflection.

  • XIII Companion Verses to the Olivet Discourse

    1. 1. XV: Companion Verses to Jesus’ Olivet Discourse Putting Jesus’ End-Times warnings into a wider biblical perspective
    2. 2. A FEW IMPORTANT VERSES . . . Warning new converts right up front about the cost of discipleship . . . . . . and reminding seasoned saints not to get too comfortable in this Christian life.
    3. 3. SlideShare’s hyperlinks won’t work until Slide #4–something to do with spam prevention, so . . . this is a filler designed to accommodate that necessity. Can you believe these old style, pre-cushion pews!?!? This is how ‘church’ gets done in Maine!

    5. 5. 12. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13.Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Ephesians 6: 12+13
    6. 6. 33. “Th ese th ings I that in have s Me yo p o ke n u ma y you ha to you have p ve trib , so ulation e a ce . overco In the , but ta me the w o rl d ke cou world. ra g e ; I John 1 h a ve 6: 33 23. And He w as saying to t hem all, “If anyone wishe s to come afte r Me, he mus deny himself, t and take up h is cross daily and follow Me . Luke 9:23 r wishes to save his 24. “For whoeve hoever loses his life will lose it, but w the one who will for My sake, he is life save it. Luke 9:24
    7. 7. 16. But you will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death, 17. and you will be hated by all because of My name. 18. Yet not a hair of your head will perish. 19. By your endurance you will gain your lives. Luke 21:16-19
    8. 8. 10. . . . that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; 11. in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. Philippians 3:10+11
    9. 9. 10. Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night. 11. And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death. Revelation 12:10+11
    10. 10. Here lies the significance of Revelation 12:10: The force of the phrase “and the y overcame him” declares that “they”, (the “brethren” ) overcame “him”, (their accuser, Satan). These ‘brethren’ have a spiritual status that allows them to conquer Satan because of the “blood of the Lamb and because of the w ord of their testimony and they did not lov e their life even when faced with death.” That spiritual status looks suspiciously body-of-christ christian to me.
    11. 11. T h e s e ‘b re th re n ’ (c a n th e y b e C h ri s ti a n s ? ) represent the margin of victo ry in God’s war against the Evil One. Had they failed to stand firm with their testimony, God would h ave failed. (See Lucifer’s challenges to Go d viv-a-vis Job in the OT. Satan makes these same challenges regarding the Tribulation’s bre thren, loses his gamble and thereby loses the wa r!)
    12. 12. The brethren applied Christ’s Oli vet teaching even to the death and left Satan with no valid accusation against them! To Satan, these brethren looke d like weak links in God’s plan of redemption: bre ak them and God cannot keep His word to redeem them. The moment when one of God’s promises fail, Satan wins all. These brethren do not fail their God because their God does not fail them. The Blood of the Lamb covers them. The full armor of God protects them and these brethren stand firm in the face of Hell, itself.
    13. 13. They overcame him! No finer epitaph, no more glorious eulogy, no higher commendation ever describes another group of Christians anywhere.
    14. 14. Our modern American sense of entitlement to comfort and safety makes the historical christian experience of persecution practically unthinkable. Yet, tribulation and persecution have historically forged the deepening faith of christians. To what perpetual bed of ease dare we American Christians feel ourselves so entitled?
