History <ul><li>Established in 1998 </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Granted 501 (c) (3) status in 2000 </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Founder </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Sheryl Fenderson, divorced mother of four. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Single parent for more than 12 years. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Searched unsuccessfully for resources designed for her needs and the needs of other single parents. </li></ul></ul>

History <ul><li>Why was the organization created? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>To help bridge the gap between the greatly limited resources of single parents and the necessities they so often are not able to obtain. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>To stand a source of support for single parent families. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>To help create and maintain a network of information, support and resources for single parent families. </li></ul></ul>

About Us <ul><li>What services do we provide? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Locating and referring families to organizations that have the resources for which they are searching. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Who is our target population? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Single parents, working poor, families whose resources are just beyond the limit to receive public assistance, families not receiving enough public assistance to meet their needs. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>What area do we wish to serve? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>DeKalb County </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Single parent families from any county that contact us for assistance. </li></ul></ul>

Current Programs <ul><li>Proposed programs that we will initially offer. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Single Parent Packs </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Packages of household and personal hygiene product offered at a greatly reduced cost. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Get-a-Kid-Thru-College Packs </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Packages of household, personal hygiene and other items geared toward the needs of college students. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>*Health Education Outreach </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Information concerning healthy lifestyle choices, prominent health issues in DeKalb County and other health information. </li></ul></ul></ul>

Outreach <ul><li>*Health Education Outreach </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Information concerning sexually transmitted diseases will be provided. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Target age range is from 18-30 years old. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Health care professionals will be available to answer questions and provide information. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>During times that the professional is not available, contact information will be provided. </li></ul></ul></ul>

  10. 10. A Few Facts <ul><li>In DeKalb County: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>There are 28,442 households being managed by single mothers. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>There are 5,345 households being managed by single fathers. </li></ul></ul>

Some Daunting Numbers <ul><li>149,325 – The number of children 1 living with their single fathers. </li></ul><ul><li>722,027 – The number of children living with their single mothers. </li></ul><ul><li>50,993 – The number of teenagers 2 being raised by their fathers. </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>1 – children, as defined by the US Census Bureau are between the ages of newborn and 14. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>2 – teenagers, as defined by the US Census Bureau, are between the ages of 15 and 19. </li></ul></ul></ul>
  12. 12. ALARMING!! <ul><li>10,210 teenage girls have had babies in the past 12 months in the state of Georgia. </li></ul><ul><li>Translation. . . .there are 10,210 new single mothers and fathers in the state, who may need resources designed to meet their unique needs. </li></ul>

Value Added by A Cup of Joy <ul><li>Support for single parents and their children. </li></ul><ul><li>Provision of programs and services geared toward an underserved population. </li></ul><ul><li>Addition to the network of organizations supporting family cohesion. </li></ul><ul><li>Assistance for single parents, regardless of economic level. </li></ul>
