  3. 3. Plug Flow Reactor (PFR) A Plug flow reactor is an idealised tubular reactor model in which each reactant enters and travels through a cylindrical tube in the form of a ‘plug’. It signifies that each reactant molecule enters the reactor at the same velocity and has exactly the same residence time. As a result, the conversion of the reactants and other dependent variables are functions of position within the reactor. PFRs are widely used in fast and high-temperature reactions in large-scale continuous production environments. Characteristics of an Ideal plug flow reactor are: Perfect mixing in the radial dimension implying uniform cross section concentration Has no mixing in the axial direction, also termed as no axial dispersion No temperature variations along the pipe Uniform velocity profile along the cross section of the pipe Plug flow reactors are considered to be more efficient than the stirred tank reactors when considering the kinetic parameters of a chemical reaction under isothermal conditions, especially when same volume of reactants are considered. However, in general practice, stirred tank reactors are considered to be more convenient and profitable.
  4. 4. A double pipe heat exchanger is an assembly of standard metal pipe and standardized return bends and return heads, the latter equipped with stuffing boxes. One fluid flows through the inner pipe, and the second fluid flows through the annular space between the outer and the inner pipe. The main function of a heat exchanger is to increase the temperature of a cooler fluid and decrease that ofa hotter fluid. The double pipe heat excha nger has its major application in waste water treatment and is used commonly in the chemical, oil & gas, food processing industries. It has applications in digester heating, pasteurization, heat recovery, pre-heating, effluent cooling. Several advantages of using double pipe heat exchanger are: - Economical and simplicity ofoperation and construction - Easy to clean and repair - Modular design helps in addition of extra sections as per requirements Double pipe heat exchangers are well suited for high pressure applications because of the relatively small diameters of the tubes. These are used in high fouling services and for smaller duties. The double pipe heat exchanger work specifically in either counterflow or parallel flow and are not recommended for crossflow operations. It is best utilized for counterflow operations. Double Pipe Hecit Exchanger
  5. 5. Sheii ond Tube Heot Exchanger Sheii and tube heat exchangers are widely used in process industries with several modifications. These are commonly used in oil refineries, refrigeration, chemical plants, etc. These are more economical than the double pipe heat exchangers as they involve usage of a large shell instead of several double pipes used in parallel and are relatively used for larger duties. Both the shell-side and tube-side heat transfer coefficients are of equal importance, and both must be large, if a satisfactory overall coefficient is to be attained. Sheii and Tube heat excha ngers have two main categories: 1.Those used in petrochemical industry which tend to be covered by the standards prescrìbed by TEMA (Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association) 2.Those used ìn the power industry (e. g. in feedwater heaters) The fluids can be single or two phase in these types of heat exchangers and can flow in a parallel or counter current flow arrangement.
  6. 6. ‘è Continuously Stirred-Tank Reactor (CSTR) In a Continuous-flow Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR), reactants are added and products are removed continuously ata constant rate while the reaction mixture is continuously stirred using internal agitators or recycling the mixture internally or externally. The output composition of a CSTR is identical to the composition of the material inside the reactor, which is a function of residence time & the rate of reaction. CSTRs can be used for reactions involving Iiquid phase, gas-Iiquid phase and solid-Iiquid phase and ìs used where agitation is required in the reactions. These are also known as backmix reactors. When infinitely small number of CSTR reactors are used in series, they are equivalent to one PFR which implies that as we increase the number of CSTRs in series, the results approach that of PFR. Characteristics of an ideal CSTR are as follows: - Runs at steady state and the reaction rate is dependent on the final concentration - Reactor is equipped with impellers ensuring proper mixing - The ratio of the volume of the tank and average volumetric flow rate through the tank gives the residence time which is defined as the average amount of time spent by the reagent inside the reactor Advantages of CSTR includes its usability in continuous operations. lt is applicable for two phase runs and is known for its simplicity of construction, low maintenance cost and ease of cleaning, low operating cost.
  7. 7. K ‘ . Evaporator An evaporator is generally used to concentrate the desired product by introducing various effects ergonomically and ensuring heat recovery optimization. It operates in two ways namely Backward Feed and Forward Feed evaporator. This 3D model illustrates a Multi-Effect Evaporator (we have used a double-effect falling film evaporator for this example) which can go up to 8 effects Iike in Sugar beet industries. Evaporation is similar to drying, with the difference being in the phase of the product in both the operations. Evaporation produces a single vapour fraction generally and is different from distillation in which several fractions are obtained. Evaporator consists of a heat exchanger for boiling the solution and a means to separate the vapour from the boiling Iiquid. In a single effect evaporator, steam provides the energy for vaporization and the vapour product is condensed and removed from the system. Likewise, in the double effect evaporator, the product (vapour) Ieaving the first effect is used to provide energy for the vaporization in the second unit. Multi-effect evaporators can remove much larger amounts of solvent than is possible in a single effect.
  8. 8. A pumpjack is an overground drive used to mechanically Iift crude oil from an oil well, when there is not enough bottom hole pressure for the emulsion of crude oil and water to flow aII the way to the surface. Pumpjacks are commonly used for onshore wells producing oil in low quantities. These are more commonly used in oil-rich areas where many pumpjacks are installed over the large oil fields. It has a capacity of producing Sto 40 Iitres of Iiquid on each stroke. A pumpjack converts the rotary mechanism ofthe motor to a vertical reciprocating motion to drive the pump shaft, which resembles a characteristic nodding motion. Pumpjacks have Iargely effected the petroleum industry towards achieving positive worldwide acclaim and has become common for onshore oil extraction. With gradual development of technology, more optimìzed and efficient pumpjacks have been deployed, extending the life of the well by many years which further allows the companies to extract oil from remote areas, which would otherwise remain untapped. Pumpjacks are known for its low operational costs and its performance can be monitored remotely which has been made possible with the advent of technological advancements. These are also used on a smaller scale to replace traditional hand-pumping techniques at water wellsand are not exclusive to the petroleum industry.
  9. 9. Centrifugal Pump In this major class of pumps, the mechanical energy ofthe fluid is increased by Centrifugal action. In a basic Centrifugal pump, the liquid enters through a suction connection concentric with the axis of a high-speed rotary element called the impeller. Liquid flows outward in the process and Ieaves the outer periphery of the impeller from where it is collected in a spiral casing called the volute from where it Ieaves the pump through a tangential discharge connection. For a given Centrifugal pump operating at a constant speed, the flow rate is dependent upon the differential pressure or head developed inside the pump. The Iower the pump head, the higher the flow rate.
  10. 10. Distillation Column O8. Distillation columns are separation equipment used in industries to separate components of liquid or vapour mixtures based on the differences in volatilities. The most commonly used types of distillation columns are tray towers and packed bed columns. The figure on the Ieft shows a tower that contains a mix of various types of columns and trays to optimize its absorption, fractionation, stripping and extraction performance as per the needs in a process. In designing a distillation column for a given separation, the number of stages required in the process and the flowrates of the liquid and vapour streams must be determined first. In the mechanical design of the column, tower diameter, tray spacing and detailed Iayout of each tray is considered. Tower diameter is established initially in the design process. Weirs and downcomers are designed subsequently which are used to handle the required liquid flow. Tray geometry is then considered in more details. Finally, the general operating conditions for the tray is examined and the optimum range of operation is established. Different types of trays are used in distillation columns depending upon the requirements: Bubble cap trays are rarely used for new installations on account oftheir high cost and high pressure drop. Sieve trays offer quite a few advantages over bu bble-cap trays, and their simpler and cheaper construction has Ied to their increasing use. Valve trays can be regarded as intermediates between the bubble cap and sieve trays and offer advantages over both. Liquid distributors are designed for optimal dìstribution ofthe liquid in the columns. In this example, a notched troughdistributor is used which is especially suitable for largertowers. Because ofthe large free area, it is also suitable for higher gas rates.
