  1. 1. CANDIDIASIS
  2. 2. CANDIDIASIS 1. Candida is a type of yeast that normally lives in small amounts in places like your mouth and belly or on your skin without causing any problems. But when the environment is right, the yeast can multiply and grow out of control. The infection it causes is called candidiasis 2. At least 15 distinct candida spp. Can cause human disease, but invasive infections are caused by five pathogens: Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis, Candida parapsilosis and Candida krusei 3. The most common pathogen is Candida albicans
  3. 3. Candidiasis affect areas such as: Skin Throat Mouth Blood Vegina Gut Genitals Signs and symptoms of candidiasis vary depending on the area affected
  4. 4. Thrush (Oropharyngeal Candidiasis) 1. When the candida yeasts spread in the mouth and throat, it can cause an infection called thrush. 1. Adults who: are being treated for cancer, take antibiotics, wear dentures, have diabetes, HIV/AIDS. 1. Symptoms include: White or yellow patches on the the tongue, lips, and gums, redness and soreness in mouth and throat, pain when swallowing 1. Treatment: Antifungal medicines
  5. 5. Genital yeast infection (Genital Candidiasis) 1. This happens when too much yeast groes in the vegina 2. Causes: Pregnancy, Diabetes, Medications like antibiotics and birth control pills, A weakened immune system, Wearing a wet bathing suit or workout clothes 3. Symptoms include: Extreme itchiness in the vegina Redness and swelling of the vegina and vulva etc 4. Treatment: Antifungal medicine Skin yeast infection (Cutaneous Candidiasis) 1. When an overgrowth of candida develops on the skin, an infection can occur 2. Causes: Warm weather, Tight clothing, Poor hygiene, Obesity, Weakened immune system 3. Symptoms: Rash, Intense itching, Skin cracked and sore, Blisters and pustules etc. 4. Babies can also develop candidiasis of the skin because diaper provides ideal environment
  6. 6. Invasive Candidiasis 1. If candida yeast enters the bloodstream, it can travel heart, brain, eyes and bones. This can cause a serious, life threatening infection 2. Causes: People who have recently admitted to a hospital or live in a health care facility, Diabetes, a weakened immune system, Kidney failure or are on antibiotics 3. Symptoms: fever and chills 4. Treatment: Antifungal medications 5. People having surgery are higher odds of getting invasive candidiasis
  7. 7. Prevention (Conclusion) 1. A diet that supports the immune system and is not high in simple carbohydrates contributes to a healthy balance of the oral and intestinal flora 2. Wearing cotton undergarments may help to reduce the risk of developing skin and veginal yeast infection, along with not wearing wet clothes for long periods of time 3. Oral hygiene can help prevent oral candidiasis etc 5. Treatment of candida overgrowth does not seek the eradication of candida from the diet or the person, but rather a restoration of the proper and balanced ecological relationship between man and yeast.
