MARK CAVENDISH
endured a second day of
misery in the Tour of
Britain as he found himself
boxed in during the final
sprint and missed out to
Australia’s Leigh Howard.
Cavendish crashed near the
finish of the first stage on
Sunday and was unable to
overhaul his former team-mate
Howard, who rides for Orica-
GreenEDGE, in the sprint into
Knowsley Safari Park yesterday.
Cavendish was led out by
Bradley Wiggins and stage-one
winnerLukeRoweonthe180.7km
trek from Nottingham on
what was to be a bad day for
Team Sky.
As well as Cavendish missing
out, Rowe lost the yellow jersey
to Unitedhealthcare’s Boy van
Poppel after the Dutchman
finished third.
Sky dictated the pace,
closing down a six-man break,
and as the stage neared its
finish it was Tour de France
winner Wiggins in front and
seemingly poised to tee up
sprint expert Cavendish. Rowe
took over lead-out duties but
when it came to Cavendish’s
moment to strike, the Manxman
appeared to get boxed in and
Howard was able to escape.
“With 600m to go I led into it
with Cav in my wheel,” said Rowe.
“He said he wanted to try and let
me go and slip a few wheels back.
We knew there was a bit of a dip
and he’d use the run.
“Unfortunately on that dip the
riders switched from right to left
and he got a bit chopped up. It’s
frustrating but you
could see how fast he
was coming up near the
finish line.”
Sky’s sports director
Servais Knaven revealed his
frustration, saying: “Cav wanted
to let Luke go and leave the gap.
A few others came through and
he was still in a good position.
“He had to brake in the sprint
as a rider moved to the left. He
had to check up and start
sprinting again. That’s part of
the job, but it was a pity
as he was fast enough to
takethewin.Wecontrolled
the whole stage and then
we got help from Endura at
the finish. It was a hard day.
The team put together a really
good lead-out at the end and
will look to do the same in the
next stage.”
The eight-stage Tour moves
to Scotland today, with the
third stage from Jedburgh to
Dumfries.
Wiggins, gold medallist in the
time-trial, missed yesterday’s
Olympic parade in London but
brushed aside feelings of regret
at not being in the capital.
“We’ve got our own parade to
do this week so, you know, this is
our day job,” he said. “We don’t
have the beauty of having a
year off now because the cycling
calendar is still going on.”

Cavendish crashed near the finish of the first stage on Sunday and was unable to overhaul his former team-mate Howard, who rides for Orica- GreenEDGE, in the sprint into Knowsley Safari Park yesterday. Cavendish was led out by Bradley Wiggins and stage-one winnerLukeRoweonthe180.7km trek from Nottingham on what was to be a bad day for Team Sky. As well as Cavendish missing out, Rowe lost the yellow jersey to Unitedhealthcare’s Boy van Poppel after the Dutchman finished third. Sky dictated the pace, closing down a six-man break, and as the stage neared its finish it was Tour de France winner Wiggins in front and seemingly poised to tee up sprint expert Cavendish. Rowe took over lead-out duties but when it came to Cavendish’s moment to strike, the Manxman appeared to get boxed in and Howard was able to escape. “With 600m to go I led into it with Cav in my wheel,” said Rowe. “He said he wanted to try and let me go and slip a few wheels back. We knew there was a bit of a dip and he’d use the run. “Unfortunately on that dip the riders switched from right to left and he got a bit chopped up. It’s frustrating but you could see how fast he was coming up near the finish line.” Sky’s sports director Servais Knaven revealed his frustration, saying: “Cav wanted to let Luke go and leave the gap. A few others came through and he was still in a good position. “He had to brake in the sprint as a rider moved to the left. He had to check up and start sprinting again. That’s part of the job, but it was a pity as he was fast enough to takethewin.Wecontrolled the whole stage and then we got help from Endura at the finish. It was a hard day. The team put together a really good lead-out at the end and will look to do the same in the next stage.” The eight-stage Tour moves to Scotland today, with the third stage from Jedburgh to Dumfries. Wiggins, gold medallist in the time-trial, missed yesterday’s Olympic parade in London but brushed aside feelings of regret at not being in the capital. “We’ve got our own parade to do this week so, you know, this is our day job,” he said. “We don’t have the beauty of having a year off now because the cycling calendar is still going on.” By Simon Yeend TRAINERS (last 10 days) S Curran 80% (1 wins and 3 places from 5 runners), Mrs S Leech 75% (1/2/4), B J Llewellyn 73% (3/5/11), P Kirby 67% (1/3/6), J Ryan 60% (2/1/5), J Scott 60% (1/2/5), Mrs L Hill 60% (1/2/5), N Twiston-Davies 60% (1/2/5), A Balding 54% (2/13/28), Mrs L Stubbs 50% (2/0/4), N Richards 50% (1/1/4), R J Price 50% (3/2/10), P Bowen 44% (3/5/18) JOCKEYS J Duern 80% (2 wins and 2 places from 5 runners), A Coleman 67% (4/2/9), P Brennan 67% (3/1/6), M Demuro 62% (5/3/13), D Devereux 60% (1/2/5), M Lane 58% (4/7/19), J Maguire 55% (5/1/11), A Ajtebi 50% (1/1/4), I Burns 50% (1/1/4), Miss Alice Mills 50% (1/1/4), P Hills 50% (1/1/4), R Thornton 50% (2/0/4) Best Races for Favourites: RED 3.00: 60%, LES 2.20: 50%, RED 4.00: 45%, LES 3.50: 40%, RED 5.00: 35%, LES 3.20: 30%.
