Introduction and Objective
3
• Successful polymer project started in 1985 in the Courtenay sand of the
Chateaurenard field located south of Paris, France.
• The objective of this paper is to report the results of a detailed
compositional simulation study conducted to understand this favorable
result.
• The performance of this pilot was simulated using a compositional
chemical simulator called UTCHEM developed at The University of
Texas.
• Polymer: Partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide.
Geology and Reservoir Characteristics
4
The Chateaurenard field is divided into three main structures: Saint- Firmin, Chuelles, and
Courtenay.
Vertically it consists of 3 unconsolidated sand layers. The lower layer is the polymer flood
pilot target.
Reservoir Thickness: 0-7m
Porosity: 30%
Permeability varies from 800 to 3000 md, mean is ~ 1600 md
OOIP 73.6 million bbl
Oil and Water Viscosity 40 cP and .73 cP respectively, Oil Density 27 API
No free gas
Production History
5
1st -> 1000 ppm (1985) then tapered the concentration, 6th -> 200 ppm
(1987)
Inverted Five spot patter
Total polymer injected: 297K bbl. or 82,300 lb, 1.06 times the pore
volume of the pattern
4 producing wells were kept at about the same producing rate, the total
production rate was almost the same as injection rate.
The cumulative production was 2.5 million bbl. from Courtenay sand.
Field vs Simulation
Production and Injection Statistics
Simulation Input
8
• A base case is run by the simulator
• Then other cases are run while changing the following parameters
Adsorption
Permeability Reduction
Dykstra Parsons Coefficient
Layering of the reservoir
• The other cases are run and a sensitivity analysis is performed to
compare their results to the base case and see how changing the
parameters affect the oil recovery.
Simulation Input
9
• The Matrix Decomposition Method was used to generate the
permeability distribution of the fields
Base Case
• K=1549 md, VDP(Dykstra Parsons Coefficient)=0.221
• Correlation Length Scale λDX=0.221, λDY=1, λDZ=0.33
Simulation Input
10
• Simulated Area=1640.5 ft by 1640.5 ft
• Grid =15 by 15 by 3 ft with ∆X=∆Y=109,367 ft
• 3 vertical layers were used for the base case with ∆Z=3.06858 ft.
• Constant Porosity=30%
• Uniform Initial Oil Saturation=62%
• Salinity dependence was neglected
• The longitudinal and transverse dispersion were, 1ft and 0ft
respectively
Conclusion
11
• This project clearly shows the high potential of polymer flooding
under the appropriate reservoir conditions and with good design
and implementation methods.
• This is the first time that a study of this type with an accurate
compositional simulator has been reported for polymer flooding.
• Now For the Technical & Economic Analysis
Polymer Flooding
12
Adding polymer to the water of water-flood

Increase in viscosity

Decrease in mobility ratio

Increase in volumetric sweep efficiency

Increase in oil recovery
Polymer Choice
13
Choosing the best polymer for polymer flooding is a very complex question. The
efficiency of the polymer depends on:
(1) The amount of oxygen at the injection and the addition of a scavenger in
large amounts will not correct it. Oxygen and scavengers form free radicals
(2) The stable pressure of injection which depends on the flow, permeability,
polymer, viscosity etc.
(3) The quality of the polymer
- For the same injected viscosity the high MW products will give a lower
viscosity in the reservoir
-Harder are the gels, more the pressure of injection is high and the
mechanical degradation
Results and Discussion
14
Oil saturation vs. Time
15
• API -38 exhibits lowest oil saturation
• API-38 shows highest water saturation
• Therefore, Polymer injection improves sweep efficiency and
accelerates oil recovery
Cumulative Oil Recovery vs. Time
16
Polymer API-38 shows highest oil recovery
Polymer Cum. Oil.

Conclusion 11 • This project clearly shows the high potential of polymer flooding under the appropriate reservoir conditions and with good design and implementation methods. • This is the first time that a study of this type with an accurate compositional simulator has been reported for polymer flooding. • Now For the Technical & Economic Analysis
  • 12. Polymer Flooding 12 Adding polymer to the water of water-flood  Increase in viscosity  Decrease in mobility ratio  Increase in volumetric sweep efficiency  Increase in oil recovery
  • 13. Polymer Choice 13 Choosing the best polymer for polymer flooding is a very complex question. The efficiency of the polymer depends on: (1) The amount of oxygen at the injection and the addition of a scavenger in large amounts will not correct it. Oxygen and scavengers form free radicals (2) The stable pressure of injection which depends on the flow, permeability, polymer, viscosity etc. (3) The quality of the polymer - For the same injected viscosity the high MW products will give a lower viscosity in the reservoir -Harder are the gels, more the pressure of injection is high and the mechanical degradation

Editor's Notes

  1. Objective of this paper is to simulate a successful polymer flooding done at Courtenay sand of Chataurenard field located in south of Paris, France. They used a compositional simulator called UTCHEM developed at UT Austin. The polymer used was partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide. The importance of permeability reduction and adsorption of the polymer on process performance was also evaluated. Polymer grading: The actual polymer flood consisted of injecting a large polymer slug followed by five smaller slugs of decreasing polymer concentration to decrease the viscosity contrast with chase water, a classical polymer flooding design method called polymer grading. Polymer grading did not make much difference indicating that fingering was of little importance under the conditions. Oil recovery was dominated by other factors such as polymer adsorption, fractional flow, and heterogeneity.
  2. The Matrix Decomposition Method uses a log normal distribution and a spherical variogram to generate permeability distribution of the fields. It was assumed that the total injection rate is equal to the total producing rate because during the pilot the total injection volume was only 6% more than the total production from the 4 wells.
